Did a search and saw a few past comments including one where member was squeezed out on weekend during charter boat change over.

Any recent experiences?
Any particular sections that would minimize the chance of getting kicked out?

I have a dated GWP with me but wondering what has changed, if anything

Thanks in advance:cool:

My Own Observations

Since I'm experiencing the wonders of Lavrio since Weds pm, I'll add some comments that might help others in the future.
Space Availability - Fri and Sat are a problem as the charter companies (based in Lavrio and those that bring boats down from Athens) are all doing their turnarounds at the same time - it is crazy. I watched Charter company staff turn away private boats from the dock as they were awaiting more charter boats and had berths as signed.
Layout - there is a floating extension (20m?) on the L in the GWP. Inside the extension / L are mostly private small power boats and further in the fishing fleet which is pretty active. As You continue around the Harbour, the charter companies dominate the North and NW which include areas that have been improved. But clearly, there is still not enough space. When I arrived on Weds a nice sailor, Jilles(sp) helped me get settled ( many of the berths on the .extension have tailed moorings. It was peasant, mostly, until yesterday. Possession is 99% of the game but I also happen to be a past customer of one of the charter cos, so helped me stay in place. electric and water available. Fee collection is very passive, today was the first day the harbor master saw me and said he would wait till Monday to collect
Think the rate is 1.5 euro per meter @ nite
Comfort - mixed, if the wind and seas are coming from NW-NE(prevailing) then things are OK, but if the winds and seas start coming up from southerly directions especially SE , the opening in the breakwater + chop in Harbour is very uncomfortable, like last night when it rolled all night.
Traffic - This is a very big and active Comm'l port so ships of all sizes, tugs, fishing boats are moving frequently with associated wake, noise and navigational challenge
Alternative - Olympic Marina is very close to the south, very big, pricey but more comfortable
Lavrio the town - everything is here, a short walk from port, but still a small struggling place.
Transportation - taxi and bus. I tried the bus which is a suburban line that stops often, certainly the slow boat. Most people woul probably share a taxi to airport

If I missed something You are curious about, let me know:cool:

A few more lines

After writing the details and the use of the words " small struggling place ",
I was walking around town and realized that maybe the words were somewhat unfair.

Earth could be described as a small struggling place in the Universe, that many of its residents seemed to be determined to destroy sooner than later.;)

Back to Lavrion aka Lavrio, maybe working class town would be a better description. It's not a touristy place (not a bad thing) as there are no hotels or rooms to let (that seemed strange) but You won't go hungry, thirsty, or lack for any of life's basic services. If You want more upscale you stop in a Taverna or Cafe that surround the harbour and if you want local just wander a few blocks into town and voila.

Berth services - Elec & Water were not a problem. Fuel is delivered by mini-tanker(advert signs posted or just ask charter co rep) - I saw 3 different companies fueling charter boats as they returned including a BP truck.

I stand by my comments about uncomfortable chop depending on wind.

Certainly more than an adequate place to stop preferably mid-week for supplies, crew change, repairs.

Ok, now I feel better:cool:

Seems Fine

JB: You seemed to have captured the essence - the only word that jumped out at me was "comprehensive" used to describe yacht services.
Guess between Olympic Marina(close by) & Lavrion its true - I personally did not see a huge presence of Marine services around Lavrion. Sure the charter co staffs were doing various maintenance stuff and maybe a Volvo Penta van was parked on the dock one day.
I did visit a Chandlery near across from the west side of the harbour and there was a Marine Engine shop visible in the same vicinity but I did not get close enough to inspect.
Olympic Marina supposedly has many vendors / services however I did not visit to verify.

Great stuff Chuteman. I've updated http://jimbsail.info/mediterranean/greece/athens to reflect your comments. Hope I've got it right! Let me know if you think it can be improved further.

Jim
I would hesitate to recommend anyone of limited means to go near Olympic marine, they have there own contractors alone to work on any boat in the yard,
It then appears that you only deal with Olympic, who add a large commission to the price, there is also a policy of no fixed priced work and the final bill can be completely different to what you think.
When I had work estimated for there, a open end price of 70000 euro . I declined the price they refused to let me to remove the boat from the yard, until I paid a loss of profit penalty of 3000 euro. I had the same work completed by the same contractor, Sparcraft for 20,00 euro cheaper in lavrion 1000 meter away.
If it was not for St Margaret insurance I would have lost my boat because of these rogues.
Do not go near this yard.

Thanks Chuteman. I've modified the page to split Olympic from Lavrion town. Much clearer, as you suggested.

And thanks rtBoss, when I checked my notes I found I had a forum post of yours referring to that repair, but it hadn't been ticked off as being incorporated. Naughty me. New words in place.

I have used the chandlery mentioned above. The lady in the shop was helpful and pleasant but she carries very little stock. I wanted a short strop of 19 x 7 wire with Talurit eyes on each end. She ordered one to be made in Athens - ultimately three times! The first one was made with 7 x 7 wire that did not fit the eyes properly. She rejected the second one before we even saw it. The third one was OK but the whole process took a week, which was not a problem as we were stormbound. It arrived on the day we were kicked out to make space for the charter fleets.

As you come out the harbour cross the road and walk down a small road to a park, there is a road on the right going up a hill, about 30 meters up is a chandelry, good prices, reasonable stock, we got collared by the harbour master for 1 months stay at 380€, think he charged us for all the boats that came in stayed and then snuck of.
The pontoon moorings near the ferry terminal were in a bad way, some of the pins that hold the pontoons together were missing and only held by rope, gets very choppy there sometimes, had the best burger i have ever tasted there, in one of the little cafes opposite, not a bad place really.

More is Better

Good to see more comments to help future visitor or help others make an informed decision, if it fits their needs

Olympic - not surprised by rtb1's comment - everyone talked about the place as pricey in every way, although ransom was not mentioned. I did get quoted 49€ a nite + vat for a 13m boat. I did not accept but did see the large marina as i headed in towards Lavrion.

Jimb I have sent you a lot more details by PM, as you will then see DO NOT GO TO OLYMPIC MARINE should be posted on your web page.

cheers bobt

bobt,

Thanks. I have a small black list of businesses. It's growing. I don't publish them on open sites (other than to give veiled hints . . .) in order to avoid litigation. If people ask privately about the hints, I give more detail.

Almost all are places where I have received two or more independent reports of sharp practice. The most common situation is a boat has been hauled, has had work done, and then launch is refused until a disproportionately high fee has been paid for "a change from the agreed work".

So, anyone, keep me informed if anything like that happens to you. Ideally by posting a comment on my web site - which means you have to be logged in to it!
