Launch of our Elling E3

Will update you on how she handles the sea in a few weeks time. Must say I'm really looking forward to that - as she has behaved impeccably so far.

The canvas cockpit cover is the 2 part bimini that had just been fitted (that morning), so we didn't take it down as we were itching to get her into the water.

Yes - I think that dark blue + red looks great and has been the standard on the Ellings for a while (though you do see some white hulled ones around). A co-incidence that Gludy has the same on his trader I think.

I'm a bit in the doghouse over the interior shots - as I didn't get many, and the family are a bit miffed. I didn't remove the protective wrappings on the soft furnishings (other than to inspect things) as the yard still had a few things to do - well, thats my excuse anyway. I did take a couple of piccies of the instrument panels (you can see where my interests lay /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Magnetic compass is due to be installed upside down in the panel under the fluxgate compass (as I'm not happy just having an electronic compass) - so it will be in line with the helm position. Navtex is just around the side (you can just see it on the left of the panel).

Main panel, with alarms on right (oil pressure, battery voltage, coolant & exhaust temperatures on the top and engine & saloon smoke detectors, bilge and shower water levels beneath). The 2 square lights beneath the rev guage are for the racor water alarms.

Rick she looks absoulutly stunning, can't wait to see her in the 'flesh'. Don't think it would be very appropriate to guess 'where is this' /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Looks like you were very brave going through that very tight bridge, no fenders /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif whilst dad was taking the photo /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I rather think the little harbour bridge is Heusden on the Mass NL

last time i was there the water level changed some what between a visit at the start of a cruise and the way home. Had been in earlier, so made fatal assumption will be ok today,.......... Ran agound under the bridge!!!!

lovely boat by the way, I assume i see bow & stern thruster joy sticks.

whos paint, awlgrip??

Spot on, it is indeed Heusden. We had intended to go back and overnight there and have an explore, but time go the better of us - which is a real shame. It was a bit shallow inside the harbour (especially when you've not checked the depth guage yourself and are trusting that the yard had the offset is right - which it was /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

Yes, bow and stern thrusters and they are very effective - so I can cheat tonnes. Am finding myself using them way more than i did with a twin engine setup, but part of that at least is because the tracking of the boat is so good with the keel that I come alongside perfectly parallel, but about 6ft out. I will get better at that over time, I hope /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Rick - with a boat like that you should be getting the upper hand on time for a change!

Absolute stunner and I have yet to see or hear anything about her that wouldn't have been as I would have specced either!!!

Must admit we have twin & bow thrust and it is great to come along side from far away parallell to the quay.

if I ever get to spec a yacht might go down the one engine and bow / stern thrust route.

if you are back near Heusden again there is a lovely anch in the oude arm of the afgemade mass

We've done far too little in the dutch waterways - just the usual touristy bits such as Willemstad and Zierikzee. We thoroughly enjoyed them and will definitely be going back. Wherever we went we met friendly people who invariably started off with "I'm afraid my english is not very good" and proceeded to be fluent (putting my language abilities to shame). Definitely a great & relaxing place to cruise - and so many places to go!

Thrusters

The thrusters on these boats were demonstrated to me a couple of shows ago - I was hugely impressed how powerful they were. Split 100% Forward and 60% aft if I recall so you could do the old sideways in/out malarky.

What is the rating (HP) on yours please?

Mimic diagram v similar to my boat. I find it v useful as a quick check of whats on and what is'nt. How did you get on with the single engine and bow/stern thrusters?

heusden is the town lower middle, and the st andreies canal are to the top right connects mass to rhine.

Re: Thrusters

I think its 8hp bow, 12hp stern. Bow thruster has its own batteries (with separate mains charger, and feed from engine alternator via a diode setup), stern thruster is from the service bank. They did try larger ones on the bow, but there were less effective because the tube is larger and is closer to the waterline.

Mike: With the keel, the boat tracks really well, and the bow and stern thrusters were very affective against a F4 holding us on in their tight mooring (tight because in front is the travel hoist, and behind is the stern warp of a massive hotel barge they're working on at the moment). Couldn't easily spring off their mooring because of the layout - so did just use the thrusters in bursts. Didn't find manoevring too hard, but am learning about prop walk - the stern drifts slowly to port in astern with zero steering (unless you use the thrusters which makes it easy - use bow thruster like a ruder almost /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

Beautiful, boat Rick. Congratulations. As I've already told you I went aboard a E3 at the Ft Lauderdale show and I think the interior is more impressive than the exterior.
Do you have the wing engine?

Ah, we were wondering when we were aboard the E3 how they would fit a cockpit bimini to allow standing room. Is there standing room with your arrangement?

Thanks Arthur (and everyone else) for the comments. I promise I will get interior shots on the next trip /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

No, we didn't opt for the wing engine but did max out on the fuel filters (with alarms at the helm) and oil change system to cosset engine. The prop is pretty protected by the keel, and its normally fuel issues that stop a diesel. They don't fit all that many wing engines it seems - mainly for British owners it seems.

As for the bimini - yes, we have standing headroom under it - and the back portion can be removed leaving just the small section to give a bit of rain protection when going into the deck saloon. Can leave that up most of the time, unless you're dropping the radar arch down - when the stainless has to be released (4 through clips). They did have to lift the stern light up on a frame (which I had noticed that hadn't done on an earlier boat I saw - but they apparently fixed that and changed the plan for our boat accordingly). Gives us a nice place to hang courtesy flags though (they had put hooks on there already for that /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
