Trying to repair the neck seal on my survival suit - does anyone know if latex sticks to the rubber neck seals? (as opposed to the expensive aquasure cement etc)
What kind of a seal is on your suit? is it neoprene or latex?
If it is latex then any impact adhesive eg bostic will work.
I used to use it to replace seals on my diving drysiut worked ok never had one come off.
Will expect alot of oh no you can't but it worked for me.
Upto you! it's cheap.
I agree with Alan - ideally bostic two part (2402) for latex seals - and if you want to do the job properly tape both joins as well.
Done lots of drysuit seals like this - and not had any problems.
Neoprene is the thicker material is it not (often used in wet suits)? Which means my seals are latex I guess (black, very thin, rubber like).
I will do a search for bostic (never used it). Is it a bit like evo stick?
Black latex is on sale on ebay at £5 for 250ml from a reputable dealer - would that not be cheaper than bostic? Plus it is black. Would latex adhere to latex? Do I need to rough up (key) the old latex seal? It just has a tear and hole here and there.
Thanks for replies you two.
From what you are saying are you trying to patch an existing latex seal ? Normally you would replace the whole seal. Patching is likely to be a very temporary fix - as:
1) The hole is normally caused due to the lates seal starting to deteriorate - so patching just shifts the stress points on a bit and it goes somewhere else
2) Patching would give you a thicker bit which would stretch differently - and again likely to cause problems.
Superglue works quite well as a temporary emergency repair (like just before a dive !)
Yes - you should roughen the surfaces gently and then degrease as much as possible (I think the proper solvent is toluene - but thats bound to be a carcinogen and impossible to get these days) - alchohol (preferably not malt ;-) shoudl do almost as well
thanks for that, I was patching and I get what you mean about being an old seal.
Trouble is, it is not a seal which you stick your head through, it has a zip up the front of the suit.
Is aquasure seal rejuvenator any good do you know?#
Thanks for the great link re: bostic
It is not for survival - I use it as foul weather gear (being goretex) and I never through anything away until it is totally trashed
When I used to dive we used a product called Shoe Goo, not sure how its spelt but was available from running shops. I was told it is almost exactly the same as aquasure and it certainly worked.
