Theoretically it should be 20mm.
In practice I can't get the first two pairs through the top link and can only just get single pairs through subsequent links.
It doesn't help having arthritis in the hands, either or that the rope is as old as the boat.
No doubt Vyv or VicS will ride to my rescue.

If you check with Jimmy Green the answer is 14mm.
See: http://www.jimmygreen.co.uk/products/yacht-ropes---rigging/anchor-warps-spliced-to-chain (Breaking load 2900kg......check you deck fittings!)

I think Jimmy Green might be a little to facile - I've put 12mm onto 7mm chain with no problem - and 2900kg is an optimistic break point for polyester - one needs to have a safety factor of at least 1.8:1.
Though the chain gypsy is alleged to be able to just accommodate 14mm, I'd rather be safe than sorry and have a larger diameter, if possible.
I'm looking @ nylon and the quoted failure point of 14mm from GaelForce is 4100kg and their price 50% of Jimmy Green.
Thanks for looking it up, though.

The links simply are not big enough to take 20mm. You might get 16mm through, but 14mm is the usual size for 8mm chain.

I'm fairly sure my octoplait is 16 mm. Originally it was spliced into the chain, don't recall any difficulty in doing it. This is for the kedge. I subsequently took it off and substituted a stainless steel thimble and shackle so that I could use the octoplait as a long line if necessary. In 15 years I never have!
