I need to more or less empty my 130 litre diesel fuel tank (currently brim-full) in order to modify the tank fittings - previously I used to be able to get used as many as I wanted 25 litre strong blue plastic chemical containers free from a local commercial laundry, but they now say that elf-n-safety stops them giving them away or selling them on.

When I have finished the fuel tank job which might take a week or two as I think I'll have to get some metalwork modified, the fuel is to go back in the tank.

I don't really want to buy 6 or 7 steel jerry cans at about £20 each - anyone know of a source of cheap/free but safe containers for diesel. I'm in Falmouth

large garages will almost certainly have 125 litres steel oil drums which are ideal for the job - except that when full they need a forklift !

Try your local oil supplymerchants also.

My preference would be to buy some cheapy old oil containers (plastic 25 litres) from a garage (for whom they are normally a disposal problem). These are hand portable, but sometimes the screw cap is a bit leaky.

err, EU regulations. Drums now 20 litres.

I've got about 6 spare drums if you can't source them down in Falmouth. :)

Storing loadsa diesel at home may be breaking local Fire Dept rules and regs. Up to you to put it at the bottom of the garden :)

20 litre cans are heavy enough to shift.
Many industrial estates have a place that buys stuff in them and will give you the empty cans.
Or look on ebay.

My cadet company got a load of plastic barrels for raft-building and command tasks free from an olive oil importer. Apparently it was cheaper to use new barrels for every trip rather than send the old ones back to refill.

W Harveys in Newlyn has a stock of 200litre plastic drums, they sell them to me for a tenner each, ask them? I syphoned 800 litres from the boat while it was out, then syphoned it back when it went back in.

we have a local garage that sells red diesel in 20l cans with a refundable deposit of £4 per can. You take the empty ones back. perhaps you can find somewhere like that that will rent you the empty cans?

I need to keep the diesel on board while I work on the tank and piping, so half a dozen liftable cans stuck in the forepeak is better than a single very big one that would be too heavy to move.

Thanks to all for the suggestions though - I'll have a rummage round the industrial estates and see who's throwing out big oil cans.

We throw away dozens of 10l Ad-blue containers every week, might be worth asking your local service station if they've got any you can have

Fine for storing diesel but don't even think about using them as water carriers!

diesel containers

Needed to to do the same last year, got mine from e bay £20 for 4 free p&P the rest I got from the waste oil area in the marina( old oil 20 litre containers).

I have sourced some strong 20 litre plastic containers from a local garage - contained kerosene. All the oil ones seemed to be metal and bigger. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I had intended to suggest that you might be able to sell some of the removed diesel to some boating neighbours (assuming your boat is in a marina). It would cut down on the number of containers you need. But you seem to have solved the problem.
