Almost half of the Leeds-Liverpool canal is closing to save water because of drought conditions.

A 60-mile stretch of the 127-mile canal will be closed to boats from Wigan, Greater Manchester, to Gargrave in North Yorkshire from Monday.

The rest of the canal will stay open for navigation, but there will be a restricted lock schedule to reduce the effect on neighbouring waterways.

British Waterways said it could be many weeks before the canal reopens.

I saw this and we are very supprised as we live in Wigan and it has done nothing but Pixx down since the end of June. How come my water but never gets empty but the resevoirs do?

In depth :) bit on R4 this evening. The water sources which feed this canal are down to 10% of capacity and no more water will be withdrawn in order to preserve fish stocks etc.
A spokesman for BW stated he would like a very wet August please !

It's a cunning plan Me an the 'Meibion Glyndwr' have hatched;)

All water supplies from Wales are slowly being shut off

'We'll keep a welcome in the Hillsides
We'll keep a Welcome in the Vales

This Land of Gods will still be drinking
When you come home again to Wales
This Land Of Gods will still be drinking

When those in Wigan have to suffer
A hosepipe ban an start to whale
We'll keep a welcome in the Hillsides
An you lot just stay on Ale;)'

Yer
Like yer say Kipper , it's a load of borrocks

The North West (particularly I reckon) is suffering from the lack of investement in the water supply system
Not just in recent times
We are suffering from relying on the sytems/ engineering that has had no real improvement or ideas since Victorian times!:(

It was broadcast at the beginning of july that some sections of the leeds/liverpool canal would be closed due to drought restrictions on the 1st august, since that first broadcast, its been raining constantly. But we still have the hosepipe ban, and the reservoirs still havent reached an acceptable level to cease the ban.

Bit of a problem for all the narrowboat hire companies, and owners for their summer hols, something to moan about for years to come.

Very funny as usual quackers but I think you are right with the lack of investment.
Even if they do make massive profits.

Its Peeeing down in Wigan at the moment and has been all morning. Water butts ful again.

The truth is the lockies were warning us about water levels as far back as early May - had the reservoirs been full at the start of the season as you would expect with the winter we had up here, there would not be a problem. Kawasaki is absolutely correct it is bad management and lack of investment not lack of rain. BW have written to all of us who have boats moored on the closed section warning that water levels will drop - yet they still expect us to honour our mooring and licence fees.

In solidarity with my Northern Bretheren I have decide to reduce the water that I add to my whisk(e)ys. There you go lads, take heart I am one with you & will be right behind you in the fight (but preferably out of range).

That thought had occurred to me HLB.

The trouble is the flow on the water points BW provide is so pathetic it would take years to make an impression. Also when someone flushes a loo the water goes off.

I'm thinking of taking my NB to the coast for the rest of the summer.
