often pass this huge barge Lobelia moored near Windsor marine. Saw it was for sale, so hunted online and saw the advert

£500,000 !!

it is pretty big though, and probably has twice the floor space of our 2 bed terrace!

Plus the ex commercial boats out of France and Belgium are really cheap.

£500k is far too much. You could get the same boat for about £50k and have £450k to put a lid on it and fit it out however you want it.

Too much money !!

Yes they are taking the absolute P, I've delivered back similar patched-up old barges from France, you can't polish a turd.

Wow, what would a mooring cost?!
Can't say for the UK, but I asked someone who was having an old barge (70'+) fitted out at the yard where we kept our boat in Friesland and she told me it was 900 Euro a year with water, sewage and electrical hook-up. That is considerable less than we pay in annual property taxes. That was near Sneek.

900e sounds like a bargain. Must be £000’s here (south uk).

I actually do quite like the big one, Lobelia. If I had more money then sense, I would love to buy it, do it up properly (the inside already looks a bit dated and the outside could be made much better), and then have it in central London somewhere - never going to happen, but we can but dream.

At 39 metres long, It would be a tight fit going upstream through Bray lock (40 metres) ! In fact, I think even turning it around could be a problem, not surer the river is wide enough there.

A mooring in Blackwall Basin would be quite expensive. I should think between £15k-£20k p.a.

My diminutive 22m x 4.2m residential mooring in Limehouse (not a marina mooring) is about £10k p.a.

In the marina there are a few large boats although no 38m jobs and I think they are handing over £15k plus for those ones. I did hear about someone paying £18k.

Still infinitely better than living on land whatever the cost.

There used to be several of these old boats in Blackwall which were bought by BW with the intention of making them into floating offices. Nice idea didn't happen and they were sold on about ten years ago.

This one might be one of those I think but not sure.

I seem to remember they went quite cheaply but that's a hell of a lot of boat to deal with and expensive to moor inland.

Interesting to know how much Haulfryn charge for those moorings.

My theory about that boat, which is is made up by me and probably completely wrong, is that it has been placed there to block a certain person's the view of the River.

A few years ago they (Haulfryn) turfed off long term boat residents and they wanted to put a load of houseboats along there. There is one but they wanted a lot more of them. Anyway there were objections from unit owners on the land.

That boat looks to me suspiciously like it is deliberately blocking someone. The position of the orange liferaft hanging at exactly the right angle to block the view seems suspect.

Just a theory !

Good point about turning it around. I wonder if it would need to be reversed to the bend then swung there.
