Larch

Fairly sure its OK but also understand the tree should be felled in the winter when the sap is not rising.

Ring PARKOL boatbuilders in Whitby. They built a small replica of the Endeavour and as far as I know used Larch.

MINESAPINT.

There are several types of Larch. The best is Siberian as it is slow-growing and has a dense grain. STS Tenacious is planked entirely with Siberian Larch.

Yes.

It is probably the commonest planking timber in Britain ( a huge number of boats are described by brokers as "pitchpine" planked when in fact they are larch planked) and it is perfectly good stuff, assuming it has been felled and seasoned properly, for both carvel and clinker planking.

Yes.

Any Scottish fishing boat I have ever come accross is larch on oak. 70 year old larch on our sailing boat is in much better condition that the 40 year old mahogany in the rowing boat.

Re: Yes.

Have to agree. Fay-A is 52 years old and larch on oak. I fitted a log impeller last year (I hate drilling holes in the bottom), but the larch that came out of the hole cutter was perfect.

Larch is about as good as you can reasonably use. Obviously teak and Iroko etc would be more durable but more difficult to work. I heard a tale of a windermere motor launch being replanked after standing eighteen years of rain in a carpark. All the planks except the garboards were mahogany, the garboards were larch, i'm not sure why the bulit it this way but the garboards are now the only original planks on the boat.
