Laptop supply (12V input universal 19V output) - looking for supplier

There are a couple of other threads on a similar topic right now but I'm not sure that the people who could help me would read those, hence a new thread.

I want to buy a 120W (minimum) laptop supply - the 'universal' type that has plugs for various laptops. It's to use as part of a battery charger, actually, and I am looking for 19V but preferably also 17V and 16.5V. 150W would be even better if the price is right.

I need to order it mail order to send to Spain. Can anyone recommend a supplier, normal company or Ebayer? Maplin are very expensive as are Farnell though Farnell is a bit cheaper. There is a smaller one on Ebay at the moment at £14.99 which sounds OK but I need a bigger one, ideally.

Many thanks.

Re: Laptop supply (12V input universal 19V output) - looking for suppl

Although their unit is only 80W, our local Aldi is selling them for £10

I dont think you will get one any cheaper than Maplin just bought one myself for 29 pds. It turned up in less than 48hrs from time of order.

I guess the postage puts the price up though. Can only suggest that somebody hand carries one out for you.

Just make sure the device is good before you leave the boat for a night in the Buccanero. Especially if you're intending to charge batteries. the one I use came from IBM and I am confident it won't catch fire but it would cost a fortune to buy.

Re: Laptop supply (12V input universal 19V output) - looking for suppl

Thanks, guys. Billjratt, I take your point about the fire risk, some of this kit could easily cause a fire.

Maplins - 120W £45 150W £55
Beststuff - 120W £40 150W £33 (sic) Unfortunately, when you try to place an order with Beststuff they insist on you making a CC payment before giving the price for a delivery to Spain. Pretty silly, really, I don't suppose the get a lot of call for that but I will email them on Monday.
Aldi £10 + return ticket LEI-LGW-LEI Ebay £14.99/£12.99 but neither ebayer answers question so wouldn't use them.

I looked for one in PC City Roquetas (owned by PC World and same products) but they don't have one now, they have withdrawn it. I think that it would have been close to €100 anyway judging from other prices - Spain is VERY expensive for consumer electronics, it is invariably cheaper to buy mail order from the UK/US.

Nick, how did you get your Maplins one for £29? It is not showing up on my search.

Re: Laptop supply (12V input universal 19V output) - looking for suppl

Thanks, but that one is very low powered (3.5A, approx 70W). I would prefer something a lot bigger.

Re: Laptop supply (12V input universal 19V output) - looking for suppl

That looks good, thanks /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif This must be the one Nick bought - I wonder why that did not appear on my search? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Laptop supply (12V input universal 19V output) - looking for suppl

Funnily, it didn't show up when I did my first search and that is why I listed the 3½Amp unit and then had to edit my reply to you /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

All we have to do is get it to Worthing beach and attach to a lump of drift wood and push it out to sea
( . . . . . . "well, I'm not nicking the wood your Honour, just floating it out to sea") /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Should get there by Tuesday? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bought mine in Gib, the brand is Kensington, output 120w, -cant remember the price. Comes in a pack with about 10 adaptors. .....Seems to fit most makes. Very pleased so far.

See you in a month!

Re: Laptop supply (12V input universal 19V output) - looking for suppl

Thanks and good to hear from you, Steve. We've just come back from a dentist visit to Gib but I hadn't worked out the requirement at that stage. Very windy here for the last week...VERY! Silver Fox looks fine. Give our love to Megs.

Re: Laptop supply (12V input universal 19V output) - looking for suppl

I bought the 120w one and I'm very happy with it. Warning, if it doesn't work on the eg 18v setting and yer laptop says 19v, DON'T use the next higher setting, this advice from the man in Maplins!

Re: Laptop supply (12V input universal 19V output) - looking for suppl

Thanks for the tip. Given the problems we all seemed to have with Maplin's search I tried another ebay search this time "car laptop" and found a German distributor selling what seems to be the same 120W model for £14.99 £4.99 postage to UK or £12.99 postage to Spain (fascinating table of different postal rates on that ebayer's website). So £27.98 delivered to Spain is the cheapest yet for 120W and seems to be the same product that Maplins are offering for £45 without delivery.

Ebay 120W for £14.99

jennymckay - Many thanks but I can't find any dc-dc step-up supplies there, there are some step down ones...am I looking in the wrong place?

oldhand - Many thanks. That link is for an ac-dc supply; did you inadvertently put in the wrong link? There is a much smaller dc-dc on the same page, 3.5A (I am looking for 6A+) and I can't see a larger one on that site.

Some of these sites have terrible (almost unusable) seach facilities and you end up getting no returns for products that they do list. Silly Billies.

I am truly grateful to you all for a magnificent response - hopefully it will be of use to others for some time to come.
