Greetings all, I am trying to connect a laptop to a Evermore 320 smart antenna via the 9 pin db connector. I know what the wires are from the Evermore but do not know what the 7 wires from the db9 plug are. Any help apprcieated.

does the Antenna wire have a serial port connector already fitted? If so, just buy a serial port to USB adapter and use that.

Thanks for the quick replies. I have a pinout plan, but I do not know which wire goes to which pin. The db9 plug looks like it is factory sealed. Can you buy just the plug without the wire?

You could use a voltmeter to check which wires go to which pins?

My notes have for the serial connector <u> on the laptop </u> are:
pin2 data out
pin 5 ground
pin 9 data in
Looking at the pins, they are numbered from top left,
top row 1 to 5
lower row 6 to 9
Can someone confirm this or correct me if it wrong as I got these details ages ago.

Yes the numbering you see on the pins seems correct.

Just been down that road: first, serial to usb, then buy the DB9F bare (solder) connector + the housing (body which is assembled around the connector. You'll find this on ebay for pennies.

I have put a serial connection on the nav table for ease of connection laptop to nmea, all the fittings were available at Maplins

My GPS / Laptop connections are pins 2, 3 and 5. 9 is not used. This agrees with the pin-out diagram posted by rickp.
BTW, for soldering these connectors, a very small iron, say 12 watt is very handy.
