Laptop - Chart Plotter programme

I would not buy from any seller that puts terms on like his, though you have to scroll down a long way to read them. The seller is clearly scared of negative feedback. I think he may be selling software that can be downloaded elsewhere for free. I use open CPN, which is free and good.

EDIT. Looking at the screenshots I think it is OPEN CPN, which is a free download, as are the NOAA charts.

Get Open CPN here http://opencpn.org/ocpn/ not from a chancer on e-bay.

I think this seller, or similar, has been mentioned here before.

At the very bottom of the ad:

"You are paying for the CD and "A Reasonable cost for compilation and redistribution"
as stated under license the agreement and NOT the value of the software on the CD."

i.e. he is seeling a CD disc with freeware loaded to it, not selling the freeware itself.

Nothing to be gained from doing this unless you believe the support he promises will be of some value to you. I would not be interested in that myself so would follow Norman_E's reccommendation and download the software from open CPN themselves.

Cheers

It's just a nasty little way of making a bit of money on the back of other people's work from those who don't realize that the software is freely available. He adds nothing and charges for it. The contributors to OpenCPN, of which I am one, give their time and efforts for free for everyone's benefit, not so some amoral talentless chancer can make a bit of money out of it.

Update: anyone who comes across this thread and is tempted to give that w***er £11 for a CD-R, don't. Download it yourself from here...

Come the revolution he and his like will be forced to lick the heads clean of everyone he has extracted money from.

Dutch & belgian charts are also a free download via the Open CPN site

But who else offers

"LOGBOOK PLUGIN

Automatic tracking of vassal movements in log format"
?

I don't know about you but I'm always having trouble keeping tabs on my vassals.

I s'pose the FleaBay vendor is adding value by putting the info on a CD/DVD. He might not have been involved with the hard work of producing the software, he's just giving his buyers the convenience of purchasing a CD/DVD and charging a lot for the service - AKA the convenience offered. I wouldn't pay that amount for that service though.

He's also offering support, he says, which if it's any good might justify the fairly modest price he's asking. On the other hand, why doesn't he say what the software is? Ho hum.

Excellent support is available via the OpenCPN website on the Cruiser Forum...

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f134/

This is where the developers and people who know the product will answer any questions or resolve problems. Again, it's free. Still no need to pay that Ebay **** any money for a CD-R.

Thanks. I use FOSS almost exclusively for everything, and I am not averse to paying someone a fair price for useful support. However, this chap does not seem to be adding very much of value, and his marketing strategy is very dodgy, so I agree with you completely.
