Currently deciding were to book our annual Feb. jollies in the sun. Been to various Canary resorts and try to go somewere different every year. While flicking through some brochures came upon mention of Puerto Calero. Nice marina apparently and sounds very relaxing, however there doesnt seem to be any self catering available which we prefer. Does anyone know this area and have any comments.
Also have second choice of Playa blanca not beebn here either so comments on this would be appreciated also.
Thanks - Ian

Hi Ian - I've just come back from Playa Blanca. I can recommend it especially if you want the following: nice restaurants; clean; good beaches; two marinas; easy walking; good weather; quiet; excellent and safe for families; self-catering or hotel.

I had not been to Lanzarote before, and to be honest the taxi from the airport had me troubled a bit, what with little other than red/black lava flows to see on the journey. However...the resort won me over and is quite pretty. I will be going again.

Cheers
Dave

Been a while since i visited Lanzarote, nice marina at Colero, but VERY expensive to keep a boat there. Playa blanca a better place to stay, plenty to do but not over the top touristy. Worth a thought is the island of La Palma if you like an unspoiled island. Puerto de Tazacorte worth a look, maybe not enough going on if you have young children though.

We used to go to Playa Blanca every winter for a week of sun. I haven't been for a few years now, but we used to enjoy it, for all the reasons Dave Snelson itemises. It is more of a family resort than an out-and-out party animal drinkathon destination (you need to go to Puerto del Carmen for that) but that's what I like, anyway. Lanzarote has strict planning controls, so there isn't any massive skyscraper-type development on the island and overall it's a nice place to go.

I'm not a geologist, but the Island is fascinating, and even I could see that it is unique. Corny, but quite fun, to go to the restaurant in the Timanfaya National Park, and have your lunch grilled over the volcano. About 1/3 of the island is a desolate slagheap resulting from the last eruption (many hundreds of years ago), which has a strange beauty of its own. I believe it was where they filmed Fifty Million Years B.C. (or whatever it was called) with Raquel Welch rushing about in a prehistoric leopardskin bikini. Oooer, Missus.

Puerto Calero, as you say, does have a marina. It's new (and has two Fairlines in it), but not a lot happens there. Mainly small fishing type boats coming in & out.

The retail units are mainly empty, with the exception of a few facing the marina, which are small restaurants / bars.

Certainly wouldn't stay there. Apart from Mr. Calero's new hotel, I don't think there is anywhere to stay.

Wouldn't stay at Playa Blanca either, as it's become a mega building site, although there are some fab beaches nearby - Papagayo etc

If you want to be near the beach / shops / restaurants etc etc, best place to stay IMHO is Puerto Del Carmen Old Town. The New Town is crap, so avoid, unless you're into Fish & Chips, Irish Bars & Slot Machines etc etc.

Better still, a villa up in the hills with fab sea views and lots of peace & quiet. A car is essential to explore. There is loads to do & see especially if this is your first visit. You won't be disappointed.

Just to clarify. We have been to Lanzarote two years ago, Costa Teguise. Also been to Fuertaventura earlier this year. We like nice bars, restaurants, beeches and good clean quiet self catering accomodation. Just the two of us as my 12yr old daughter lives with her mum, my first wife; and will be at school anyway. Therefore family friendly not important.
Dave, got any pics of the area yet ?

Worth a look would be La gomera.Only 2 hotels on island all the rest of accomodation tends to be self catering and def not for the package traveller.
Very very quiet island and the scenery is stunning.
Inexpensive compared to all other islands with notable absence of a certain sort of english holidaymaker due to a total lack of football themed bars selling roast beef lunches etc.
Flight to Tenerife and then fast ferry to island.

Going in 2weeks time wouldnt want to stop at playa blanca or puerto colero but both super to visit. Pick a nice day and have lunch at puerto colero a super place.the marina very good.If you stay at puerto del carmen and the weather a bit iffy look south and if it looks OK go to playa blanca you will probably find it sunny.Try and stay in the old town if you can. The hotel San Antonio is good but on the edge of the old town.Take a walk from p.del c towards los pocillos you walk all along the beach dipping your feet in the sea!!.You can walk to the airport, quite away, and watch the planes land, quite an experience as they fly over your head about 100feet up! Swimming at p.del.carmen excellent and safe. Go to the harbour at night and you will probably see manta rays swimming in the harbour.seen them the last few years. If you like swimming go towards orzola in the north of the island and just before you get there you will see a track leading to a car park on the sea side.here the sea has worn an inlet with gold sand.the sea is about 4ft deep max. and super for kids as its very safe, with sand fish swimming round you!!
