Just returned after one week of the worst weather in the canaries since records began over 100yrs ago ie rain, clouds, wind and cold, just my rotten luck. Playa Blanca is very nice with some lovely resaurants and only about two British pubs with football on big screen and poxy live groups, not my cup of tea at home let alone on holiday. Nice beach, nice harbour, excellent shops and bar overlooking Rubicon marina. Had a trip via bus to Puerta del Carmen but only got as far as a commercial centre (shops) were not only did the Mrs buy some clothes but even I got myself some rather nifty gear. I am now sick of eating out and very nearly sick of drinking "hic" Anyway, enjoyable holiday let down only by the weather.

Yes we have had and are having bad weather, its all these bombs upsetting the gods, these never used to hapen a thousand years ago, but then there where no bombs. Seriously though, this year has been pretty bad, firts cold polar air, then rain ,now calima which is a sort of mist that comes with fine sand from the east (I soppose the arabs are racing camels in the desert). But it will soon have our normal weather and will enjoy sailing once again.

Sorry to hear about the weather Ian. You must have stayed very near where we did. I won't rub it in, but we had good weather. I walked from PB to Rubicon, just to get the feel for the area. Did you see the Sunseeker at the marina in PB? Just left to rot. Its the one with the red letters saying "Rescate" on the side with a red cross. Must have been a rescue boat. Now it just sits on barrels doing nothing - shame!

never really found a good fresh fish restaurant, like the ones you find in southern Spain. It was more pizza-pasta type fayre. But OK though. I would go back.

Was there mid Jan staying at Costa Teguise. Had 3 days brilliant weather real tropical sunshine etc, then a fantastic sunset over Playa Blanca, followed by 3 days Calima (red dust mist).

It really is necessary to have a car - there are some smashing out of the way places: Cafe Ramon in Femara, some fantastic converted wine cellars in Teguise, a lovely harbourside restaurant in Arrieta - all serving excellent food - a meal for 2 costing around 25Euros with wine (go for the Vino Del Casa - its often much better).

We hired a 'mini' car for the week, and got a brand new air conditioned Turbo diesel Peugeot 307. (6th year in the Canaries, always book a 'mini' and always get given something much better - at no extra cost!).

We worked out that we would have spent more if we had used the coach trips seeing everything we wanted to see.

And dont miss the Volcano powered restaurant at Timanfaya - food is literally cooked over the volcano - and you can go to the kitchen to see them doing it!

Sorry to hear that the weather has been so bad recently. It can be brialliant out there this time of year!

Been going to Canaries on the same week for last three years and never missed out on really good weather. This year just ate and drank all week cos sitting on the beach was not an option, spent a bloody fortune. With regards too quality of restaurants we found some really nice ones, can't say we had a bad meal all week. Had tapas, mexican, chinese and pizza pasta as you say. But all in all we enjoyed the food and the wine and more importantly each other /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Julie - Lazy week, err no /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Dave - yes I saw the ex. rescue boat. What a shame.
Rubicon marina will be very nice in a few years. Not all shops let yet and marina itself only about 25% full. Cafe del mar has great chill out music and nice wine, not to mension the fact that it overlooks boats so what more do you want. Had a chat with lady in marina office, turns out I could save £1600 sterling on my present berthing cost Ooh errr.
Ian

Pity its so far away.
