I'm planning to bring our 38ft cat back from St. Maarten via Bahamas and Azores, the aim is to cruise the med but want to fit a generator in the next few months.

A few questions for the forum :-

1. Are there decent facilities in Portugal, Spain or France where we could reliably have a generator fitted and if so, where / who ? Or head for the UK / Channel Islands where reliablity / language etc is not a problem?

2. Can anyone recommend a good diesel water cooled quiet generator?

Many thanks in anticipation

Any reasonably sized harbour will have marine engineers who can source and fit a generator. Best to aim for the bit you want to explore and then ask around. I've found nothing wrong with the standard of service in France Spain or Portugal, its often far better and more reliable than the UK, and also labour is far cheaper.
Vigo might be a good place to start as its on route from Azores to the Med...but give your self a couple of weeks to explore Galician coast.
Good luck.

Vigo is a bit high if your going to the Med. From the Azores, you should aim for Lisbon or lower. Try Lagos or Cadiz. Forget Gibraltar, they do not have particularly good facilities.

Go to Gib! Tax free! for one thing. I would strrongly reccomend the new 4 KW, fisher panda, all fresh water cooled, with a stainless sea water heat exchanger. Have one onboard, which has been fine, apart from a winding problem, which was sorted and FP have reimbursed me for.
