Are these things useless or is it just me?

Every time I use an electric polisher with a lambs wool polishing mop all it does is fill up with dry polish in minutes and then leave black marks all over the place. On the car or boat its the same.

The only use I find an electric polisher is good for is to actually put the polish or cutting compound on. This works well if you keep the mop wet, but when I want to polish off its hopeless!

Is this what others find or is it me?

Where are you getting these black marks from? Lamb's wool polishing heads, if they are the real thing, are definitely the best for polishing.

Maybe your polish is poor? Try autoglym radiant wax (the red or yellow one). We use it all the time in combination with the finishing extra gloss protection and have never had any black marks while polishing.

What speed are you running the head at? if the head is too fast and you lean too hard, you will burn the gelcoat with light to dark brown marks which are difficult to remove.

Also check that the head of the polisher is completely covered by the lamb's wool head.

Hope this helps

Here's a wee pic of our boat after using polish and gloss protection.

I use the polisher for applying and working the cutting compound but do it by hand using a cloth for the actual final polishing. It really doesn't take that long and I think it is easier and the results comparable.

Hi Markdj,

Thats the polish I use! I find the polish just collects in the mop and leaves black marks. they come off if I use a clean cloth by hand so its not burn marks its just used polish. I usually use the machine to put on the polish and then finish by hand. How fast do you polish off by machine? fast or slow?

About 1800rpm MAX, powerwash and sponge the boat first to clean it as much as possible before using the polish.

We have both used the lamb's wool to put the polish on, which makes the head wet, and we have put the polish on by hand and polished off with the lamb's wool to see which is best and haven't had any issues with black marks ever.

If the boat has been just compounded, then putting on by hand is fine but if the boat has just been washed, putting the polish on by machine is better as the polish has a certain amount of cutting value to clean and polish.
