I liveaboard, at present in Lagos, but moving to the ballearics in May, if anybody would like some info on this area of Portugal, please let me know. I am on the rig at the moment so will be available for comment. Please use this forum first, so we show its being used and will continue. Good sailing!!!!

Not very nautical but how are you accessing this site? Are you on GSM at massive cost or sitting with a cool beer in an Internet cafe?

Also what is it like in the winter there, can you stay in the boat in comfort all winter?

Very interested in Lagos. Would like to leave my boat there next winter.
Is it a safe place? Would you recommend to have the boat in the water or on the dry if you were to leave it for a few months?

I'm on a drilling rig offshore Norway. Its great in the winter, gets a little cold, but nothing that a fan heater wont sort out, the electricity is free with your berth!

Very safe and secure, with excellent security service. pontoon gates etc with card access. You can leave the boat ouit of the water at sopramar, which is by the fishing harbour, also safe. Very low crime in Portugal anyway. Cheap rates for six or nine months, but expensive for the three summer months, not a problem for me, I'm gone!

I love it there, warm most of the time, lovely old town, with not too much dross tourism and a great place to sail from, for short or long trips.

Thanks, that sounds very good. Don't need it anayway during the crazy summer months. Looks like Lagos will be it for my next winter season, and maybe two.
Hope you'll find an equally good place in the Balearics.

Re: Faro Airport nm

If you are near enough Go fly from stanstead or Bristol and are excellent value if you book early enough- our cheapest price was in January this year at £42 each return including taxes!
Train from Faro to Lagos stops just opposite the marina and is excellent value. Free bus from airport to railway station.

Faro, 1 hour by taxi, or by train to Faro then by taxi to airport, which is the cheapest way, and in summer the quickest! The railway station is literally in the marina.

The winds blow form the south in the morning, nil by lunchtime, then northerly in the afternoon, gwetting quite strong, then nil after 7 in the evening.

Went there before the marina, loved the sardines being bbq'd on the quayside, also an excellent fish market. Very pleasant town with good shady streets, good shopping.

An ideal place for a marina, centrally placed and well sheltered. Would be the place for me if I wanted to be based on the Algarve.

Longjohn, they still barbecue sardines round at the fishing harbour, all the sardines you can eat, salad, red wine (ok after the first few glasses) bread, 3 hours later, full, shitfaced and £12 lighter for four of us! The marina is ideal and the peeps are still friendly, as opposed to the costaplenty! I still love it, but new horizons call, ballearics, then winter in Barcelone.

Partner reminds me that they did have a big problem a few seasons ago with 'loose'electricity in the marina. It apparently caused massive electrolysis(!) problems with large number of boats. Haven't heard anything about it recently though.

Colin,
Thanks for starting this interesting thread, we are joing what seems to be a mass exodus down to the Algarve/Med in May, can't wait to quit work and get going. I have heard the Balearics are stuffed with boats and that there is little room?
Port Vell in Barcelona seems to be a great place to overwinter, may see you there.
Regards,
Hugh
