I am planning to leave Lagos around 15th Ocober to sail to Canaries to join up with the ARC. A couple of people have suggested that this is too late in October to have a safe passage, any comments?
The received wisdom when we did it was leave in September - we left on the 26th. In September the northerly trades still blow, in October the winds are less constant but it's unlikely you'll get bad weather.
I have done this trip 3 times well into November with the added snag of getting out the Straits. Got a bit stuffed once but that was schedule driven! Yes it can kick off a bit but really you only need a reasonable 5 day forecast, available easily where you are. Gets a bit chilly after sunset.
It is a passage that can actually be done all year round with attention to the forecast.
Hope this is reassuring and have a good trip.
Counsel of perfection is to be south of Gib by 1st Sept but few can manage it. We left Lagos late Sept and had a very quiet passage to Madeira and the Canaries.
Here's a tip for you...
We spotted loads of ARC flags around the marina in Lagos so we organized a party. We had about 25 people on board (the waterline went up 6") and they formed a nucleus of friends we met repeatedly over the next 6 months. In Las Palmas there are so many people, most of whom are there only for the crossing, it's more difficult to get to know like-minded types. We flew our ARC flag in every port from Plymouth onwards and got to know a lot of people that way.
