Are there any Ladies out there sailing the Med single handed with full responsibility for their vessel. I leave the UK next month (weather permitting) to head for Spain. It would be great to have a womans advice accociated with sailing, mooring, anchoring, living aboard in a foreign country - probably the same as a guys, but just in case I have overlooked something, i put it out there.

hi ya im just on my way back,in rochelle at moment if i can be of any help regards your questions feel free to ask,but i aint female !

Hi - not single handing but two women - in the last six years we've sailed with a man aboard for precisely 5 days! Not cruising this summer (sadly) due to injury but have spent a lot of time wandering the western med. We sailed Falmouth to Coruna and then south in 2006.

If you want to PM with anything go ahead. We're off to sail with friends (also two women) in Italy v early tomorrow or I'd write more now. The main thing I would say is to know enough about your engine to resist the rip offs. This applies to men too but is a whole order of magnitude more important for women.

Our blog (www.sailblogs.com/member/roaringgirl) has more. Good luck and enjoy!

Really the learning curve is the same for men or women!
The only thing you may lack is "jerk strength", and you're likely to develop it fast!
Presume you have a windlass, if not, that's the first job.

doing an Elen

You will probably need to up the stick some time.. without someone to look after you ..

I use a climbing harness with Petzl bits and pieces.... they now make a lovely thing called ASAP which is a safety brake that will go up and down slowly but stops you if the main rope breaks..

I know the main halyard is very unlikely to break but the nagging feeling is with you and I feel much more happy with a second safety rope..
