L.O.A. is used normally as the basis for marina charging and includes such things as the pulpit.

I added a non-standard pulpit with just a very slight overhang on the hull length but it is one which brought me down one category of charging.

A good investment and one worth looking into.

It didn't stop some marinas though trying to charge the theoretical length based on some book info. I insisted then on the boat being measured.

Well done. Used to have similar problems with a bowsprit, especially when I ran it inboard in marinas. The other one was calling a Moody 33 a 9.99m LOA!
Sounds almost a good a deal as that other LOA - Local Overseas Allowance!

Marinas are quick enough to demand true measurement if you have an anchor that sticks out the front, or davits out the back.

We only ever go into marina for the odd night but they seem to be happy to charge me for the 37' of the 37' 4" of LOA and they don't seem to worry about the 2' extra for the windvane gear. Still, I guess that they'd be touchier if I lived in one all the time.

Where's "down here"? Your profile is very empty!

Not that its tends to live afloat that often, but my 5.85mtr RIB has been 5mtrs for about 6 years in a local marina now!

Stupidity of measuring !

Friend of mine had his anchor slung over the stem when boat berthed. When he got his bill for next seasons mooring ..... he found he was UP a category .... why ? The anchor tripped him up into next scale.
He removed the anchor and asked for re-measurement - it was refused and he was advised that he still had to pay the new fees.

He walked and berthed in a different marina ..... wiser after the event !!

LOA - trouble with LOA - many people do not realise that this is OVER all .... and includes rudders, rails, anchors hanging over, dinghy's in davits, etc. etc.

Re: Stupidity of measuring !

For winter storage I told the yard my boat was an Iroquois cat and let them look it up. It comes out at 30 ft. It was actually a MkIIA which is 32 ft. Nobody seemed to notice in the 7 or 8 years I wintered there (and I certainly wasn't going to disabuse them!).
