Hi, additional filtering is always a good idea, and at one time used a big funnel with a 'waterproof filter' (fuel would go through but water wouldnt) but it slowed filling down, and the fuel vendors would get tetchy as it sort of implied their diesel might be dirty. I think that apart from faulty seals on filler caps the biggest source of water in diesel is caused by condensation. The use of Fuel Set or Soltron cures that by absorbing the water IMHO. So it makes sense.
The one I have is really only suitable for a raggies size fuel tank as it does slow the fuel transfer rate, and needs to be tended all the time. but there is a new one suitable for larger beasts here
The F-15 has duel 74 micron Teflon coated stainless steel fuel filters. These filters now filter down to 74 microns or .005" and when properly used will virtually eliminate contaminated fuel going into your tanks.
I carry a 1 gallon diesel container cause when you have finished fuelling there is a cup full of fuel left in the funnel (and some gunk normally) I pour this into the gallon can, and when I have enough in that can I pour it back into the funnel at the next re-fuel.
Simon, I am afraid I dont know the answer to that one. IMHO it would be sensible to at least run the tanks nearly dry before refilling and redosing with 'the other one', whichever it may be, as a precaution. I also feel it is a better idea to stick with a brand, rather than chop around frequently. They certainly both work.
yeah I used them before on the Sealine when they fitted the timer control, the only difficulty is getting a quick appointment, Ben is very good, clean and tidy worker. Glow plug was fien but I told him to change it any way, it was the control unit that was bust, all done now, effin cold today came home early
Paul.....Soltron is not a water absorber Fuel Set is. This can cause a few differences in what happens when you use them.
1 Fuel set removes the water therefore when you are using it when wintirising your engine expecting there to be no bug (remove the water remove the bugs food source) then this may not be so as you are not using the fuel therefore not removing the water.
2 When you are using the fuel and I will use the example of a Racor filter as I have spoken to Racor agents who have spoken to Racor on my behalf, Fuel Set will actually break down the special chemical lining on their fuel filters that is put there to repell water to the traps. This means that you will pull more water through the system and through the filter increasing the likely hood of a filter collapsing or not doing its job properly. Racor will not replace a collapsed or broken filter if Fuel Set or another water type remover has been used.
3 Water traps are there for a reason, to trap water. The engine manufacturers allow in their calculations for a certain amount of water passing through the filters but not for an additive to increase this number by a factor of up to 10. This can cause other problems which may cause a fault and negate your warranty. Just for yor information folks when I had my Hydraulic lock they actually tested my fuel as well as the engine oil. The fuel came out with no problems or issues what so ever same with the engine oil. I also flashed a letter from Volvo to one of our BIG clients where they recommend the use of Soltron just in case they were thinking of using it as an excuse.
4 If using a product in your fuel that has not been put there by the fuel manufacturers you had better make sure it has been tested properly. Firstly by a lab which has a doctorate or affiliation with the fuel industry also by companies who test contaminated fuel and treatments for the Military, MOD and Aviation companies. Check it has some recognition of passing these tests such as a Nato Stock Number or has passed the military filtration requirments. If it doesnt have these it means it could be anything and anecdotal claims re not going to get you out of trouble. See the previous magnet theory threads on PBO for more info.
5 Ebersbacher recommends Fuel Set as during the trials they set up it passed and was the first fuel additive company through the door to put their product under Eb's nose that did enough things for them to give it an approval. Jeanneau recommends Volvo engines in their Leader 805s and you know what problems I had with that set up, so much so that I had to keep the engine running whilst fishing. Aslo would you use an additive recommended by your heating module for your engines. Only in seperate tanks however, you would more likely use an additive recommended by your engine manufacturer in your heating module.
any how mixing Soltron and Fuel set is a waste of time and money. Obviously I have to say this but .......there is only one product to throw in especially when overwintering that will sit there doing the job.
Soltron is much more expensive than the others, although the price of Soltron has not gone up in the last 5 years as is not going up next year 2005 or I hope the year after 2006 so the field is starting to level on that argument especially when you start matching the dosage rates. However, at the end of the day the choice is yours.
