You'd think that the most experienced sailor would be the best prepared instead of which he is the worst. Already 100s of miles behind they have discovered that the lead from his battery to auto-pilots was underspecced. Somebody needs to be keel-hauled!

See my post in PBO scetion ............ How come everyone else's electronics have been fine throughout the whole race. How come his electronics were rebuilt after he got to Fremantle only to fail again immediately he left. How come it happens to him and seemingly no-one else ?. Maybe Saga are pleased as it portrays (which he is) one of the older generation who will get there safely despite all the difficulties and inconsistencies (ie boat electrics) of modern life. I think I smell a rat. Maybe i'm just turning into a grumpy old ***.

He does seem to be getting more coverage for for his 'Robin-L-Fixit' act than the bloke whose name I've forgotten whose at the front of the fleet.

OTOH, don't think it reflects well on Saga, on whom assorted wrinklies depend on for everything from coach trips to Bruges, to plumbing repairs.

Saga must be delighted

ooh nonsense, Saga is getting fantasic coverage of exactly the right quality. Thrashing along at the front of the fleet would alientate millions of clients, whereas pottering along through a long series unfortunate cockups and breakages reflects the real-life experience of most if not all wrinklies. AND of course his coverage in the media will last for weeks or months longer, well after the race is actually over, another bonus.

Actually I expect having stuff breaking and him complaining about technology might actually be part of the terms of the sponsorship. In fact, if you'd thought about it i bet Volterol or Deep Heat or Elastoplast would have paid for most of your re-decking project, hm?

It seemed to rain every day until I could get the boat in a shed.

tcm, couldnt agree with you any more. Seems to me that the Velux was designed for this sort of thing. Bring on the Vendee Globe - far more realistic of what the sailors can do, what the boats should be able to do, what we all should expect the kit to be able to do (bearing in mind what we have to pay for it), and seems to be to be a lot less "staged".

Not so sure about that, he did seem to be wondering quite what he was doing there once or twice during the last leg!

I think it is a great shame that this race has developed the way it has. It would have been nice to see the boats racing against each other without out all the technical problems, which I believe reflect the differing levels of funding. Day 1 ensured that all the boats we dissapated and things only got worse as time went on. I would like all the boats to be reliable with working systems so that they can actually sail against each other.

RKB has been a trooper, diving in an extracating himself from fishing nets was a fantastic feat, and one that few here would have contemplated.
