Why is it obligatory to have a display of various knots in a cabinet , in any nautical location. I:E on a boat , any nautical pub / restaurant , marina clubhose chandlers etc. You can even buy tea towels with knots on so you can practice tieing up when you are washing up. Are boaters into bondage as there seems to be an unhealthy obsession with pieces of rope? Come clean have you got a display of knots. Or do you stare longingly at knot display when your having a pint in the "Jolly Sailor" or the "ship" "Happy Boater".

I have, on my office wall, a framed example of which you speak/write...fairly tacky but it was a gift from the company president. On close inspection several of the 15 knots are incorrect, according to the brass labels suitably engraved below each. Further inspection shows the whole thing was banged out in India. He probably purchased the lot at garage sale...but he is the president! Cheers, Richard.

In a society that is loosing its cultural heritage there is a certain compensation - not to mention fiscal opportunity - in maintaining the 'icons' of that lost heritage. Hence knots in a glass cage. If the heritage had current relevancy then everyone would retain the knowledge of such knots and therefore there would be no/reduced need to display them in a very artificial context. In a few years expect to see GCSE past exam papers in a glass cage in rememberance of an education system that no longer exists but of which everyone has 'fond' memories!

A quick glance round my boat will prove that new knots are being invented all the time. It is called progress and it was taught me by granny.

politically correct and proud of it

mmmm wellll I would be even more concerned about chains and bridles if I were you..;)... luckily the boaty brigade seem to have steered clear of leather tho'

i'm not into bondage (but eager to learn) but part of my job involves tying knots, something that we are expected to practise. i actually like knots, they help me in everyday life when i'm taking things to the tip that don't actually fit into the trailer. or to hold things down that arn't suposed to be there! no i like knots, and no ones gonna convince me that the framed variety arn't good too. so poo to all of you that think that they are just for show. knots are important and being able to tie them well and properly in advese conditions may well save your life....know your knots make a friend of knots, for if knots are not your friend then they must be your enemy to be feared......the horror!..... ok it's late
