Maybe this should go in the lounge? and not if it's old news.

Apparently it's been announced that in the 2016 windsurfing will be replaced by kitesurfing.

Why can't they run both? The two sports have no similarities apart from they both use the wind?

Kitesurfing is a sport? Did that happen when Greenwich got put into east London?

The IOC limits the total number of events, and for sailing it's 10 (down from 11 at Beijing). So the Star has gone, as has the Elliott (women's match racing), as well as the windsurfing. Coming in for Rio are the womens' skiff (49er with smaller rig), mixed multihull and the kites.

Events for Rio:
Men's Kiteboarding
Women's Kiteboarding
Men's One Person Dinghy - Laser
Women's One Person Dinghy - Laser Radial
Men's One Person Dinghy (heavy) - Finn
Men's Two Person Dinghy - 470
Women's Two Person Dinghy - 470
Men's Skiff - 49er
Women's skiff - 49er FX
Mixed Two Person Multihull - Nacra 17

It's not a sport, but makes good television.

Agreed. A friend of ours is one of the top men professionals.

But a sport worthy of the Olympics? Not in my opinion. Judging criteria are far too complex and open to interpretation. Bit like ice-dancing.

You mean like Rhythmic Gymnastics, or Synchronized Swimming, or half of the Winter sports :)

Meh.

I'm sure it's a fine thing for young people to do standing up on "boats' with nowhere to carry the gin or sleep on, before they grow up ;-)

Former windsurfer, now (land) kite flyer when I'm not on my "beds'n'heads" boat.
