Lovely cold sunny day out today....just a couple of hours.... 18yr old and I .....

His first time to be dropped at T&K....all alone....organise the boat on his own then cruise down and pick me up at Sonning. A minor event for all of us but a big deal for him being trusted to do it all single-handed.

And just before Shiplake College, port side going downstream where the rope swing is on the island........2 Kingfishers......stunning metallic blue......:D

Loverly day.....

Beautiful aren't they .

We have a pair that nest in the undergrowth by the lock.

Stunning.....when the river and surroundings are as grey & brown as today, they were a flash of searing colour......couldnt miss 'em.....loverly....

Another good reason for keep the boat in the water this winter:D

I used to fish a secluded spot of the Avon near Chippenham and a Kingfisher would regularly land on my rod. I feel very privileged to have had that experience.

The lockkeeper that was at shiplake around thirty years ago used to feed wild birds from the palm of his hand,it was compelling to watch.

our siamese cat once brought a KINGFISHER in through the catflap!

after some negotiation i persuaded him to release the poor bird,
once the cat's grip was relaxed, the kingfisher did not even drop to the floor,it flew at a remarkable speed out through an open window, apparently unscathed.

You let a 'YOUTH' drive your boat ALL ALONE?
Clearly you have not been speaking to Ramage enough, he'll warn you of the dangers of letting your son take the helm...and the rest of boat!

My father used to let us take his boat to Henley when we were 16/17.

Richard and I and three friends for two weeks. I remember once we brought it back empty of fuel and with a ring marked into the polished teak dining table where we had put a plate down straight out of the oven.

Apparently , you could hear dad shouting at us from the other end of the road. :D

The whole family believe the "petrol fairy" will refuel their cars. No doubt Rebellion thinks the "Diesel fairy" will refuel Silver Dragon.

(He famously failed with Carli though!)

Yes...yes....it was a dilemma but far safer & cheaper than succumbing to his request to drive my car :D

In fact he was so efficient/swift, I didnt even have time to have my pint at the Bull in Sonning! No sooner had I taken a mouthful, he was on the phone to say he was on the approach to Bluecoat School and couldnt see me by the lock....too bl**dy efficient for my liking.

Next thing I know, he's pulled into the lock on his own, aft line secured and waiting for me to grab the fore line...
