Im having serious trouble understanding how this knot is done.

Turks head is no problem, but i cant seem to understand how the knot is split to go either side of the spoke on the wheel. The book i have is the rya one and it just tells you what passes go what side of the spoke, no actual diagram.

The turks head im doing is 6 lead 5 bight and the book tells me that pass 1,5,6 is to the right of the spoke and 2,3,4, are to the left. But i cant seem to get the knot flush on the wheel and im getting very peed off with it!

I have googled the knot but no joy. I would appreciate if anybody has a simple step by step diagram to follow that they could send me.

But please, the diagram has to show me how to tie it around the wheel and spoke!

Many thanks in advance

Is this the knot you are referring to ?

A turk's head with a spoke going exactly through one of the "crossings" between the rope

I have put a step by step sequence here

http://sybrancaleone.blogspot.com/2011/09/turbante-ruota-con-raggio.html

After the fifth picture, instead of "Qui la T è stata ribaltata, si vede quindi la faccia "dietro" dell'intreccio"
please read "In the following pictures, the wooden T has been flipped, the visible side of the T is the one that was invisible in the previous photographs"

Does it help ?

i have a diagram for a turks head wrapped around a wheel to mark the centre rudder point but its quite a simple knot as opposed to the version you are trying

can scan and send it if you like but it wraps around the outside of the wheel and not a spoke in sight

Vadrouille did you manage to do this?

I'm trying to do the same but having difficultly finding any decent instructions online. Ideally I'd like to create the attached but would be happy with what Roberto posted if it proves too tricky.

Any tips much appreciated.

The picture you show is what want to acheive. Unfortunately after 2 days of trying I could not do it. I have now passed this task onto a crew member to do whilst I'm away working!

Delegation at its best!

I believe the knot posted bySimon P85 is a Pineapple knot and not a Turks Head. You will do better if you research this knot. However, this is a difficult knot not easily tied. Putting a spoke through the middle of it makes it much harder.

If I wanted to tie this knot on a straight pole, such as a boat hook, I would first tie the knot on a former, then slide it off the former and onto the boat hook. A piece of sanitary pipe is ideal. First screw two groups of four screws around the circumference of the pipe leaving space between these groups for the knot to be formed. As the cord is led around the pipe the screws will hold it in place as the cord goes from top to bottom of the knot.

To do this around your wheel and spoke, you will need to devise a former to support the cord and keep it in place as you are tying the knot. Perhaps wrapping some cardboard around it with screws pushed through it first would work.

I would suggest you try just doing this knot on a simple former first. It is not easy.

Further Info

Having given the tying of a pineapple knot, on a steering wheel, with a spoke passing through the centre of the knot, more thought, I think I have an idea that may work as a former.

Use two Jubillee clips around the wheel, one either side of the spoke. Take eight nails and put a 90 degree bend in each. Under each clip, clamp four of the nails with the bent portion of the nail standing out from the wheel and on the spoke side of the clip. Each group of nails must be in line with each other.

I think this should work and, when I can get to my boat, I will give a try. Let me know how you get on.

Wishing you luck with this.
