Westerly can motor at 5 knots and sail similar average.

Any guidance on best point on the tide to depart to be able to get the tide into Milford. Probably go to Dale for a stopover on the way to Swansea.

On the back of a cigarette packet, I make it about 90 miles, which is 18 hours at your 5 knots, so three 6 hour tides. I think I'd like to be going into Dale at slack water, becoming flood.

So.. leave at High Water, (HW Dale if it's much different to Kilmore), and you will experience 6 hours of ebb tide, 6 hours of flood tide, 6 hours of ebb tide, then it should be ready to flood just as you are arriving. If early, you may have to fight the ebb for a while, but you will know it is coming to an end. If late, you have 6 hours of flood to play with.

This type of navigation has served me reasonably well as a very quick check of someone else's workings, when crossing the Irish Sea/St Georges Channel over the years, but has also resulted in some major cock ups on rare occasions... :(

Kilmore quay to dale is about 65 miles.you want to time it so you have the south going tide for the last half of the crossing .passing between grassholm and skokholm is the simplest way to approach Milford Haven.Keep a good look out for lobster pots anywhere around Milford Haven.
