Killing time - Google Streetview in the Ionian

I may be a bit behind the times here, but here goes anyway.

I was trying to locate a hotel in Preveza when Google Maps offered me a Street View. Bit of a surprise. So I had a look at a few other places. It's great! You can walk down the Main Street in Nidri, and carry on round to Vlikho past the Yacht Club.

Other good spots are Vassiliki & Sami, and you can go all around the harbour at Fiscardo

I'm going to my boat near Nidri on Friday via Athens and will be having a real time walk in some of those places in between doing a few small ( very) jobs on boat -

Funnily enough when we were walking up the Kritsa Gorge (Crete) last Friday and were taking a rest halfway up, we were passed by two guys, one with a Google street-view camera strapped to his back. The other guys job appeared to be to wipe the various lenses every so often. We all reckoned they must be running out of street if they're now doing the gorges.

BTW. There is no road up Kritsa Gorge, only a tiny path with a lot of scrambling up and over boulders and the like.

No, that's the Samaria Gorge at the other end of the island (south of Chania). Kritsa Gorge is tiny by comparison but much more impressive I think.

Ah it was the Samaria Gorge that we ventured down just before we left Crete.

Do people anchor for the winter in Vlixos bay at Nidri I think its called that any way

If you mean Vlicho bay, then a mooring can be hired from that Yacht Club Taverna. I suppose folk do anchor. I spoke to one guy this year who told me that his insurance company will cover his boat on a mooring but not at anchor. I think that is up to negotiation between boat owner and insurance agent.

Tranquil Bay must be OK with a line ashore. Not heard of anyone spending the whole winter there though. Short dinghy ashore to Nidri which must be a thriving town compared to Vlicho. I think the pontoons (ex-Nielson's etc) are closed during the winter.

I wonder if two anchors are necessary during the winter?

Do not know why they call it Tranquil Bay as it is FILTHY. All waste discharged settles there YUK.

Vliho Bay is secure. Anchor close to the Yacht Club . As for two anchors Yes a very good idea.

Ah excellent,,,,Just as most go more south for the winter like crete etc,,,
but think they have some bad winds over jan feb,,,,,will ask nornabiron,,,,hee hee
As they love to anchor a lot,
Ive come across from marmaris diagonally across and up to evoia, so not done Ionion or crete yet.
