Hi OF, SWMBO and I were in Ireland 2 weeks ago (I was there on business) and we diverted off the Dublin to Limerick road to see a bit of Lough Derg. We stopped in a place called Garrykennedy(?) where there was a little marina. Idyllic spot. Lough Derg looks like a fab boating area
I think I've asked this before but we were trying to work out whether there is access for boats from Lough Derg into the Shannon and then out to sea? Another thing that was puzzling us was the range of tide in Limerick which didn't seem very large at all. Is it restricted in any way?

Hi Mike. It's a bank holiday here and blowing F8, so I've time to dig out some old photos.

Yes the river shannon flows through Lough Derg, and then down to the SW coast via Limerick city. It becomes tidal at Ardnacrusha, the large hydro electric dam, and 2nd deepest lock in Europe. There is a 102ft lock at the dam with two chambers, 62ft and 40ft, and it takes about 50mins to lock through. Airdraft limit for the lock gates is 3.6m. Garrykennedy is a lovely spot. There are about 10000 mobos registered on the Shannon and Erne navigations, many coastal spec due to large inland seas that are Loughs Derg, Ree, and Erne. Vessels regularly access SW coast via Limerick. The Shannon is navigeable by mobo 270km all the way up to the north of Ireland into the Erne system via the SEW waterway. Ireland really has two distinctly different waterway system, the canals which get little traffic, and the massive shannon and erne systems so popolar with leisure boaters of all shapes and sizes, especially cruising mobos.
