This is probably a silly question but here goes anyway.
If you have a petrol engined boat, and you do the proper thing of connecting the engine emergency kill cord to your clothing, and you get thrown from the boat, how in Gods name do the remaining occupants on the boat get it started again so they can pick you up?

You have a spare, wrapped around one of the cables or somewhere similar, taped on so nobody uses it unless in an emrgency, such as the one you're talking about. or you keep it taped to the outboard or somewhere away from the controls so it can't be used unless in an emergency.

Most these days are a toggle switch, so the occupants can start the boat by flicking the switch, even if the kill-cord is gone. Failing that, you can always bodge something up to reset the kill switch, you dont need the cord

Re: not a stupid q

firsly, you don't need to start the boat much cos you are laughing at the fallen off bloke. But there a toggle switch you can flick on to go and gettim.

However....you are right - the yamaha ones (finstance) won't work without the kill switch and there's no toggle. Crap! You should win a prize. You can make one out of a bit of carboard a scissors.

Re: Wot about diesels then...............

Got kill switches on ours bit strange really as they just kill the electrics but of course the diesels keep going. Something to do with it being one of the first diesel maxums so it's a bit of hybrid.

Have to plug them in - but just leave them connected to the ignition keys!

So you unscrew this, and put it safely here, then oopps...
All - IMHO, BTW, FWIW and NWGOI

Don't kill the electrics and leave the engines running, it will fry your alternators.

Re: howdoes it fry alternators?

Not being contentious. I can turn the lectrics off, and the engines keep running cos no spark plugs. So. what's happening now then to fry the alternators. Is the lectric production not being used or what?

Re: howdoes it fry alternators?

Not really sure, but the same as bump starting a car with totally flat battery, it apparently screws up the alternator, being open circuit, with no regulation or something similar, I can't remember the exact details, but know it screws them up. It may be with old alternators or something, but I do know it used to or maybe still does fry them, I always shut my engines down, then turn off the "ignition" circuit.

Re: howdoes it fry alternators?

Agreed you should NEVER switch off the isolation switches which also control the line from alternator to battery but not sure why ingition switches are a problem?

Re: howdoes it fry alternators?

Maybe I'm mistaken and mean the isolators, as you should never disconnect a battery with engine running or start a car with no battery conected, with an alternator. However I'll continue shutting down then switching off.

I think colins' right, you should always shut down the engine, before switching off the circuit, with the ignition switch, I do anyway.
