Kids foul weather gear

Are all kids the same or is it just mine. you buy 'em good gear to keep them warm and dry and they prefer to stay in their bunks if its wet, by the time they decide its ok to be outside on passage they have grown out of the gear you bought for them. Should I bother to buy them some new foul weather gear or just let 'em chill!!

I had similar problems - just let them chill. If you try and make them do something they don't want to, they'll just resent it and any hopes you had of having sired the next Ellen Macarthur or Pete Goss will be dashed. I just used cheap outside gear for mine and they seemed relatively happy - as you say as soon as it started raining or a bit of spray they'd head below so it was mainly a question of something to keep bums dry if they were sitting in a damp cockpit.

i put the boy in my old extra large waterproofs and pull his lifejacket tight over the top, also this method means the legs are so long he doesn't need wellies! he never complained of being cold but then he also just goes to bed if it gets too cold and wet outside.

Our son just slept all the time whilst on passage.
Waste of time and money, just buy him a new duvet/sleeping bag.

I'm busy 'using up' old foulies as winter anoraks - it;s a bit OTT for yomps in the woods, but at least I feel they're getting used!.

I buy decent jackets and cheaper trousers - it's very rare they wear oilskin trousers, they just find the most comfortable berth in the wheelhouse, and read, ganeboy or sleep - oh and wind each other up!

I used to advise kids in my sailing club to buy w/proofs from a company called TYKE - they are not just a "yachty" company and their prices are low for a quality suit. 01484 844201. A one piece suit - well made - for £24 !
They last as well as any other I have met and certainly long enough for them to grow out of it. Then I passed them on to beginner sailors.

I run a very successful Sea Scout Group with children from a range of backgrounds. We also run water activities all year round on the sea. We tell the parents we don't care if the clothing is Gill or Quality Seconds as long as it performs the task of wind and waterproof. We also tell them to purchase a size or two larger, that way it will last a little longer. We explain to the children that we don't run a fashion parade and if they turn up wearing unsuitable gear, they don't go on the water. This works well as none want to be left out. We do carry spare gear for those parents that struggle, that way no children are excluded.

The deal is:

if you want to take us out on your boat then you sit in the cockpit and get wet, cold and salty, we'll stay in our bunks till aproaching marina, pub, lights etc then we go ashore and you adjust your springs, fenders, gas valves etc.

then after 20 years they get a better boat than you!
