KHM dashing around the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour in a black rib with blue light flashing - I've never noticed them there before and I thought they were rather rude and offhand. The volunteer harbour patrol generally do a good job and are polite rather the the KHM who were barking orders (thankfully not at me). Is this a new level of officialdom or have I just missed them before? At the time I witnessed them their was no large traffic entering or leaving port.

Is the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elisabeth in Portsmouth right now ?

Men in black with side arms and automatic weapons are often seen in Plymouth. They are fair but firm in their directions, perhaps it was a training event or assessment.

yes it is, but then it is frequently there with the military police protecting it (who are always very civil)
Is it possible to get close to her on land…I’m in England for only a few more days and I would like to see her…but I don’t want to drive all the way down there if it’s not possible to get closish

Portsmouth harbour boat tours. Unlikely to get a decent look from land outside of a dockyard open day, assuming such things still happen.

You can see the ship from the Gosport side. Try the Explosion! Museum at Priddys Hard. Can have a cuppa too.

You could get the Gosport Ferry. You can also see the stern from the waterfront pub in Old Portsmouth albeit some distance away.

Explosion museum is a bit sad and run down feeling these days. Lots of screens not working, some gaps in what was there before, some bits early closing. Not all of it is hugely coherent either. And it's in the posterior end of nowhere and costs as much as the Mary Rose or HMS Warrior which are far more worth the time. Explosion deserves more love and investment - and a more oldfashioned curator.

Harbour tour is probably the way to get a reasonable look at the carrier, if so inclined.

I have found the same. I was approached yesterday and it was very low key. We have our share of the inexperienced and nut jobs but I guess it is a magnitude worse around the Solent.

Last week the whole port was closed for two hours and it was all handled with great tact. It's a good plan to pay attention though, I recall years ago a racer decided to stand on and they manned his boat and dropped the crew ashore to walk home. :)

@Stemar yes, the annual ticket is the one that makes sense if you actually have time/opportunity to do it justice; I think it's pretty good value if (like me) you really want to wallow deeply in naval history for several days. The cheaper tickets let you in to one or three things, which is fine, except that the small Victory panorama museum and tired Explosion and something else small (can't remember what) count full slots.

Get a Brittany ferry. They pass quite close and you can get a good view from quite high up.
