That's a shame. I had a good chat with the engineer in Gillingham a few years back. As it was an RNLI prototype there wasn't much in the way of documentation for all the mechanicals, so he had to figure everything out himself and document as he went along. Sounded like a real labour of love.

from the particulars...

"There will be a restriction on using this craft as a Life Boat"

does that mean you must?
or mustn't?

Thay should get some smaller, less OTT boats, and actually drive them around to deter and solve crime, this Tamar lifeboat must have been some chief constable's penis extension project. We already have the CG and RNLI, and PLA launches ITA to resue people not to mention fast professionally manned craft such as pilot cutters, wind farm cats etc who are likely to be able to help with rescues.
The 'restrictions' on lifeboat use just sounds like made-up rubbish by the auctioneers IMO.
A rum do altogether.

I take it to mean the latter.
The boat was initially an RNLI lifeboat - maybe they don't like the competition?

it was the prototype Tamar lifeboat and was never on service as a lifeboat

used for trials and development the actual Tamars in service are somewhat different

as for restrictions that is normal for the RNLI not afraid of competition just somewhat using it for rescue purposes incorrectly

it would not of course be unable to assist in any emergency when in private hands just not call itself a lifeboat

Well if it was being used for rescue purposes "incorrectly", then presumably the RNLI wouldn't be on scene. So they would prefer someone to drown, than to be rescued "incorrectly"? When did this charity decide they can issue decrees about the "correct" way people must be rescued?
I hereby declare that my yacht is now a lifeboat. I keep a lookout in case I see somebody in trouble, as I must according to the Rules, and I will do my best to rescue them, as I should. Signed lifeboatman Jerry ( non affiliated).

If I happened to buy a second-hand motor cruiser at auction, nothing would change surely?

some years ago an ex lifeboat in almost identical RNLI colours attempted to assist a yacht in a very well known area and itself and the yacht got into additional trouble

the local press and a national newspaper not noted for its accuracy reported the incident as an RNLI lifeboat it was not a lifesaving situation just a basic tow required

every boat has a duty to assist others in difficulty if life is danger and assist in routine towing etc if both parties agree

the RNLI simply don't want the new owner to call it Bloggs Lifeboat and in any case the MCA now have a very tight coding for all declared private lifeboat organisations around the BI of which there are many, Hamble, Freshwater and Caister

Thanks for the explanation Dogleg, very interesting, I did not know about those aspects. ( I deleted my post because it sounded a bit anti-RNLI in retrospect. )
cheers Jerry
