If you can save the casting, there is a thread on here about machining sheaves......
There is a bloke on ebay offering to machine a sheave from scratch if Selden can't help you.
No response from Atlantic as yet.
Looks like I will have to drill out the shaft and hopefully rescue the old fitting.
A replacement sheave should be easy enough.!
will have a go tonight
Barton produce a similar fitting in 3 sizes, not sure what size you need, but it looks like it might be the big one if that is a jib halliard off a cruiser rather than a dink.
Of course the first thing is to try to free the sheave. Heat solvents and all that should be tried. But if that fails....
It should be easy enough to drill out the old axle. You need to sight where it will be and drill from the outside. By the time you drill from both sides you should find the axle loose and may be able to punch it through. You may need to destroy the sheave to get it to release from the axle. Much depends on the size of the hole you drill. You will want a suitable size for fitting a new axle but big enough to get the old axle out.
You will need a new sheave. http://www.pinbax.com/index.asp?selection=category&cg=13&mc=134&cct=7&TypeSearch=
These people may be able supply a sheave if you can' find one in your local chandler.
I have replaced many sheaves by finding a suitable piece of SS tubing of outside diameter similar to the hole size in the sheave. This is cut just a little longer than the width of the sheave. I then fit a nut and bolt right through the cheeks and tube.
Now one of the difficulties of these exit blocks is that the outside of the cheeks is a neat fit to the hole. You can fit a countersunk screw head on one side. Not so easy to get a countersunk nut although sometimes made.
The other option which I have done is to make a cut out for the nut in the mast.
Use a nylock nut or peen over the end of the screw to lock it on.
If all this fails well ave noo one...
good luck olewill
Job done,
Twas easy,
I hadn't realised the pin was aluminium, assumed it was stainless.
Anyway, I have some 10 dia aluminium bar, cut it to length and tack welded the ends in.
Bingo, saved lottsa dosh.
