anyone got any ideas why my radio should suddenly start making a buzzing noise when the transmit button is depressed, it will not actually transmit but receives ok.
when the transmit button is pressed the tx light comes on.

That sounds like a low voltage in the power supply to me. Take what you know to be a fully charged battery and hook up the radio to it. If it works Ok you have a little detective work to do through the boat's circuitry.

"buzzing noise when the transmit button is depressed" have you tried valium.
Could be low volts as already mentioned eg. dodgy joint in supply feed causing high resistance. With Rx current draw volts may be adequate but under Tx load volts could drop too low - have a poke around with a volt meter. Could also be dodgy aerial or coax. Aerial may be ok for receiving a signal but mismatched causing Tx to trip out (back to valium again). Aerial and coax harder to check unless youve got access to a VSWR meter or borrow a radio known to be working . Anything else is likely to be a fault in the radio bringing that DSC upgrade ever closer.

Have you been around any lightening recently, Had a sort of inverted version of this problem on my Navico. Turned out to be a tiny diode in the push to talk circuit that had been zapped.

Try the low volts thing first though before digging into the set, that will be easier to fix.
