And this is not a request for the sailing Kama sutra . . . . . . . . . . . . yet.

Now I always try to make the experience as pleasant as possible for SWMBO whenever she is onboard, as I feel I should to encourage her even more into going that extra mile.

The question is, do those 12v hair driers actually work and are they worth buying? ?

My wife's views on 12v hair dryers were 'you might as well blow on your hair for all the good they are'. Also if she uses hair straighteners it does not matter if you have got a hair dryer or not if she cannot use her 'GHD''s. In fact her only answer as to a solution was 'shore power', that said she was excellent on the boat and got used to no hair dryer or straighteners without complaining, well not too much anyway...

I have one on board, it just about works, if I towel dry my hair really well first, I can use it to add a bit of styling. Most important is having a mirror near enough to the hairdryer

And beware that GHD's will not suffer a modified sine wave from a cheap inverter, they expire rapidly as a mate of mine found out which adds cost to complaining. You need a 1kw pure sine waver inverter - sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

I did a google on Gas Powered Hair Dryer. There is a patent registered.

There appears to have been a couple of products in the dog grooming world, but I cannot find one for sale.

Does seem a logical product: Gas for the heat and 12v or battery for a fan. But, I'm a bloke, what do I know!

That would be my suggestion, I have quite short hair I can more or less towel dry, although it looks a lot better done with a dryer. The wind at sea messes any style up in five minutes anyway.

I always say half the fun of yachting for women is that for once it doesn't matter what you look like, no one will notice or care. Try selling that attitude to Mrs Pete.

Forget it what you are requesting is impossible. Best just to accept this and forget about hair driers.

I did find the prospect of a working head does improve the mood significantly though.

We had a 12v hairdrier on board for a short while - once my electrical engineer had sussed out how many amps it used he demanded that it went and as it wasn't exactly what you'd call efficient I was happy to loose it. I've survived quite happily ever since with a 240v one for use on those occasions when we have shore power. If not and its winter I sit in by an eberspacher outlet which is slow but works if my locks have been well towel dried first.

Looked to buy a boat once that had a wandering hose fitted to the Eberspacher just for hair drying. Or alternatively, persuade her how much more attractive she looks with a page boy hairstyle.

TBH, if your SWMBO is inclined towards bimboism, you are pi55ins against the wind trying to keep her happy. If it isnt hair it will be nails or creased clothes, or too much sun / too little sun, or simply just the camping aspect of boating. You have to ask yourself do you want to sail with someone who moans about the experience or with the lads when you can eat curry and beer every night, fart when you want, make sexist comments about the women on other boats, crude jokes, chat up barmaids. In short, relax.

In the interests of keeping Mrs Bav happy I bought her a solar panel.

I'm sure it was a wise move as the look on her face was priceless.

I have fitted a 1500w inverter, and I swapped up to an 80amp alternator with smart charging, so we run the engine when the hair dryer or the electric kettlle is required. It's only a few minutes.

My SWMBO had suggested this, but I still can't work out why I got "that" look when I asked her to make sure she didn't bump the dinghy into the transom whilst she was drying her hair, and if she was bored perhaps give the boot top a little scrub at the same time whilst she was down there...

You get the brownie points for buying it. Whether it works thereafter is not your affair....

Yep its the thought that counts I reckon . . . . plenty of wine onboard, somewhere for her to keep her kindle charged and hot n cold running facilities and she seems to be sorted . . . . . now if only there was something to make sure the sea stays flat and she would be very happy indeed
