Keeping head's discharge hoses clear

How can you be in a hard water area if you are pumping sea water. Hard water only comes from taps due to the local underground strata that its filters through..............unless of course I am wrong so please educate me.

I was responding to an earlier poster who had suggested that flushing the toilet with fresh water (unfeasible on a small boat, but quite a number of big boats do it) may be the way to avoid scale build-up in the outlet pipe.

I never had this hose blocking issue . But perhaps fresh water flushing helps.
