I'm thinking of plumbing in a permanent pump to take diesel from the bottom of the tank , pass it through a filter/water separator and return it to the tank. The usual filters would still be in place on the way to the engine.
Is this a silly idea? How would the pump cope with the resistance of the filter? Would it burn out?

It's called a polishing system - if you google fuel polishing you will no doubt find lots of advice. Not unheard of on larger long-distance boats.

with a Merry Fisher 805 the through-put of fresh fuel should sort it

Avoid leaving the tank with air in it - ie fill up before leaving the boat. That will solve the problem.
Dead easy.

ASAP Supplies sell a suitable pump, filters and even a complete kit of parts, and have a good layout drawing and technical advice.

If you use the correct type of pump there's no problem with it burning out etc.
I bought one like this for the same job.

Or this one which is a lot cheaper

and appears to be the same item ASAP sell. I've fitted one for priming. Works a treat.
