I am aware that a good few forumites are against DW and the way he attempts to cover the cost of his films however I must say that I have just watched the Cape Wrath film plus the short one titled 'Caledonia' and must say that they are the best yet. beautiful and worth a tap or two for the enjoyment they give an old chap on a winters evening. Keep up the good work Dylan.

I agree the series is worth "a tap or two"

Well worth making a few payments to help Dylan complete the full series as well.

Not only as a general Winter's evening watch, but I'm sure it has some use for general navigation to an unfamiliar harbour
- Better to have seen Dylan sail up a river before attempting it for the first time, I'd say.

Fully support the above.
Never understood why some were set against DW, he produces beautiful films (or should I say produced as he may not be doing anymore after this lot).

Never understood why some were set against DW,

I agree that DW makes some good films, but he got people's backs up with his comments and name calling (freeloaders was a favourite). He just started coming across as rather bitter because other, younger and prettier people, were making good money doing a similar sort of thing, and he wasn't. Its a shame, cos I watched many of his films, while I have never managed to get even remotely interested in the films made by the pretty people. I think the nail in the coffin, or rather two nails were: his daughter pointing out that as a business, KTL wasn't working, and then there was the copyright fiasco. DW certainly rubbed me up the wrong way many times, but his films were simply superb and, although well worth chucking a few quid in his direction, I don't think, in this digital age, you can expect to make your money from the end user.

Not against him or the way he covers the cost of his films. I used to send him cheques from time to time and I watched his films. However I found his tirade against 'freeloaders' unacceptable so decided not to give him any more money. In fairness I now feel I shouldn't watch any more of his films, so won't look at this one. It's not exactly as if there aren't numerous others posting sailing films on YouTube etc.

To be fair he was making a fair bit of money from sailing and other films, mainly the latter, before Google confiscated it. I do remember a figure he quoted but maybe best not to re-post it. Whilst he was hard done by by Google, he wasn't entirely blameless. It was just his subsequent business models which appear not to have made up the shortfall.

I like Dylan as I said on the La Vaga thread and I was waiting for a film from my neck of the woods to tap him (I have tapped other youtubers so I wouldn't consider myself quite a "freeloader"). If he had made it round to my neck of the woods I was going to ask the club if I could offer him the clubs visitors pontoon for a few nights (if he wanted it) and keep him fed and watered, I really think he would have enjoyed the BC.

I've only watched a handful of his films, and enjoyed them but I wouldn't consider them professional which I'm sure many will dispute but watch Sea Change to get what I mean. His commentary was by far what kept me engaged, the 5 minutes of googled still photos he would put on although interesting didn't.

What did upset me was the freeloader comment, he should have put a few minute taster up on youtube and a full film up on behind a pay wall if he really wanted to treat it as a business and get paid rather then tapped for his work. Then let people decide if it was worth it rather then trying to shame them into coughing up after they had watched. For this I said I would not watch another KTL and haven't.

The other thing that was mentioned was the copyright thing which I defended him greatly even though he had done wrong. The other guy was a "piece of work" and was using technology and outdated laws to earn a living. After pressing him for an answer to why he didn't watermark his images like most photographers, Dylan PMed me to push harder. I thought the stress Dylan was put under by it would have put him off doing it again but no the next film Dylan put out was loaded with still images lifted from Google some with the copyright logo on them! I'm not sure if he's still doing it or not but I thought it was a micky take.

Dylan is a freelancer so he sees value is everything he produces or spent time on which is fair enough but you shouldn't insult your clients if that's how you see them. I saw his original request for taps to help subsidise his enjoyment of sailing ambition of sailing round Britain getting perks along the way (moorings, talks, PBO articles). Not something he was making a living out of until he spelt it out, KTL was a cash cow he wanted to milk before moving onto the next "project". Leo from Sampson Boat co has been honest with people saying funds send will help his Tally Ho project but Patreons won't get anything extra as he believes his project should be open to all to watch.

I do think he was quite stressed with the copyright thing, moving house and iirc he help one of his childeren buy a houseboat in London so I'm sure he was feeling the pinch at the time of his "wobble" so I can see why he did it. I genuinely wish him the best and hope he'll return to these forums and I enjoyed his posts, unfortunately looking back I think he just used them as a tool to promote his business and he's now moved onto the bigger audience of the yank forums who tap him more. I hope if he reads this he gets an picture of why some people have been upset, this isn't meant to come across as a bashing as things can on the internet.

Best wishes to all especially D.

There is nothing wrong with making money from Youtube, but it has to be done with good humour. One catches more flies with honey than with vinegar and all that. You also have to play by Google's rules. Asking people here to click on as many adverts as possible even if they had no interest in the product being advertised was perhaps not the smartest move because Google's customers pay per click-through and understandably resent attempts to generate clicks for financial gain.

And just before someone jumps in to accuse me of kicking the puppy ... I rather liked KTL v1 (eccentric middle aged man visits small creeks and reports on what he finds), found KTL v2 (grumpy old man shouts at motorboats) rather less entertaining and went right off KTL v3 (I need to take my family on sailing holidays. Give me money! Now!). I do wish he'd go back to v1, and maybe start filling in all the places he missed out on the East Coast.

That's a fair summary, apart from the (defamatory) bit I've deleted. A little research shows that the chap whose aerial photograph Dylan used puts a considerable amount of effort into producing them ... far more than would be needed if he just wanted to create a copyright honeytrap.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with trying to make a living out of Youtube videos, but if you make them out of pictures used without permission set to music used without permission, you're rather asking for trouble. As I understand it, the stuff other prominent Youtube sailors make is entirely original.

That is very true and I've modified my comment to suit but he could have made his life a lot easier by a small watermark. That way it's fair cop for those who use his images rather then those ignorant to the law (not that I think Dylan didn't know copyright law considering his background)

I agree. Anyone using images for commercial purposes should be checking usage rights, and it really is not credible that a BBC producer would think it OK to omit doing so. I am occasionally involved at work with rights matters to do with the BBC, and as an organisation they are punctilious about this. So are my lot, because failure to give Shutterstock (or whoever) their forty quid can cause a whole heap of pain down the line.

If you're using GIS for a commercial product the first step is easy; you filter "labelled for reuse". Doing so knocks the image of Portavadie which caused all the fuss out of the results.

Dylan often said that he believed copyright was dead with the Internet. I always thought he was wrong, and he learnt the hard way. I still think the guy was out of order, but hey ho, he seemed to have the law on his side.

Anyone using images for commercial purposes

This sort of enforces what I said about myself seeing taps as subsiding Dylan ticking something off his bucket list rather then a business. Before the copyright think I thought and Dylan was doing just that, which is shy I furiously stuck up for him, but it came clear it was a money making project, he was good at portraying that. It now seems as if a lot of the big boys are doing the same for quite a while which is why I'm careful about who I tap when I feel flush.

Hum well thanks for starting this thread, I had forgotten about DW and Keep turning Left, so I looked up and viewed the Suffolk rivers, just great viewing; so thank you .

Not sure though how one contributes to DW efforts; is it by pressing the Donate Button ?

If so what happens then ?

The Donate Button states 14k, is that what is expected to donate ?

or is the total donations so far ?

puzzled of Dawlish !
