Just discovered Spondex Stainless Steel scourers (available at Tesco - 3 to a pack). Work great as crude filters during winter layup. Teased them out a bit and placed them over the cockpit drainers. The boat is in the garden on its trailer now and no more worries about leaves blocking the drainage. Don't buy the 'use once' type as they are not stainless steel and will rust.
Yes I should by a tarpaulin, I know. But in the meantime this works well.

I use those practice golf balls, [the ones with holes in them], over my drains. They prevent things like keys, shackle pins, leaves, etc getting into the cockpit drains but allow rain through. If a big sea comes into the cockpit they just get washed aside and allow it to drain away unhindered.

I'm sure they will work well. We use them in our showers to keep hair out of the drains and shower pumps. Never had a blocked pump or drain since we started using them - big step forward!

I used brass pot scourers in my cabin ventilator to stop the bugs from comming in. Yes it did reduce the air movement but it did cut down on the mozzies.

Havent seen SS in deep dark Africa yet.

Must admit that during shore lay-up many moons ago .... cockpit drains blocked with leaves. rain filled cockpit and eventually leaked into cabin bilges .... flooded boat seriously. (I spend significant time away from boat ...) Ended up seizing engine ...

So anything that stops it happening - is worth the effort !!!!!
