You've noticed about hat drivers?

I mean it doesn't rain inside cars does it? So they are people who have no connection with their environment, which is scary when they are sharing the road with you.

Actually(whisper this) it's a very good vehicle. Softer ride than the RAV4, slightly lower geared steering and not such sharp turn-in, but really holds on once you've loaded it up. Quieter and quicker, better low speed torque and roomier. Lacks brio, but I rallied a Fiat 125S which had armfuls of "brio" but no roadholding.

Just happens to be an old man's car.

No honest, I like it.

When I first went to Australia I was told to be wary of the Felties. You soon find them once you leave the cities. They are ageing farmers who drive flat bed Utes (pickup) at 28 MPH, usually with a barking cattle dog on the back. The name Felties comes from the felt hat they wear.

I once got stopped by the military police while driving a 1 Tonne Land Rover on a road just off Salisbury Plain, because I was not wearing headgear. He was very polite, but very firm that I was to wear headdress in the vehicle. We were in the midst of a three week exercise at the time and I was long separated from my beret, as at the time we did not wear them on exercise. So I popped my tin helmet (Way before the Kevlar thingy they gave me later) on my head and continued the conversation with my head on one side as the roof was in the way.

"So, you want me to drive like this?"
"Yes sir, its the law."
"But it is dangerous."
"It doesn't matter sir, it's the law."
"You do know that I am going to take this off the moment I go round the next bend?"
"I realise that sir, and if I catch you I will make a report to your commanding officer."

It was at that moment that I realised he wasn't going to 'detain' me in any way and I went merrily on my way hoping and praying he would catch me. At the time my CO was a hell raiser and a report to him that one of his soldiers had been forced to wear a helmet in a vehicle would have been a joy.

Unfortunatley the corporal jobsworth didn't accept the invitation to catch me out.

It there are any Ex RMP's out there, I would like to point out that I worked very closely with them in NI and Bosnia and found them extremeley competant at their job. Around peacetime garrisons they are complete tits, though.
