Keep mending it until it\'s broken

I did a temporary fix the the fridge thermostat capilliary 5 years ago, attached it to the cooling plate with a cable tie when the fixing clip vanished. Saturday, I found a suitable clip from an unused nav light housing and decided to do a proper job. Unfortunately the capilliary tube didn't like being disturbed and snapped, leaving us on a 3 day weekend with a full but non working fridge.

Well we kept the food cool with bags of ice from Waitrose on day one but on day 2 decided to get 2 more bags and some heavy 2 core cable (I'll get to that) from LYH marina (ice) and chandlery (cable). Now to avoid carrying bags of melting ice too far and too long we decided to put the Honda 2hp on the dinghy and motor there rather than row ashore at Lymington Quay and walk. The outboard had not been run since last August and, despite the anti-gumming fuel additive decided a) to leak fuel as soon as the tap was 'on' and b) not to run on open throttle because it was gummed up again. OK, so plan b) row ashore at Berthon and buy ice there, whilst there to walk up to the chandlers at LYH for the cable.

The cable was required to replace a section of wiring from our fixed solar panel, which we had discovered was defective. After several hours of replacing the wiring with new and sitting with a coffee and a multitester, I decided to test the old cables I had removed - perfect! The break which caused the problem was in the first 3", where it exited the terminal box and water had got in via a chafed cut. Now had I reakised where the break was I could have simply snipped off 3" and reconnected the existing wires in about 3 minutes.

Don't you just love boats?

Thanks Nick (welcome back BigNick BTW), I did know that but Force 4 didn't have what I wanted which was some 2mm 2 core stuff and the other place on the quay is just a glorified boutique these days. Quite quiet there over the weekend, no rafting on the buoys other than a couple of boats by their own choice, I guess the mob all went to see the Stones.

Yet another reason to keep things simple!

It is quite simple, it was just me made it complicated!

We took the Honda to the local dealer on the way home and they allowed me to watch how they (apprentice) took it apart for when it gums up again next time. They did it by removing the entire carburetor rather than as I had tried to dismantle it in situ, at least worth a go next time as I couldn't make it not work more than it was not working already! On current figures I reckon our rarely used little Honda has cost over £10/hr to run, not including fuel.

I knew there was a reason I never get round to permanently fixing the temporary fixes done years ago. I will continue to leave well alone.

Re: Keep mending it until it\'s broken

You've reminded me the throttle link on my 25hp Honda has been held together with wire since I lost the split pin a year ago. Thank you for reminding me to do nothing about it.
