Keel to hull rebedding

Hi all,
I need some advice as to what sikaflex I should use to seal the keel to hull joint. I have lower the keel (1100kgs) to check on the keel bolts and they are fine with no rust after 24 years. Keel is lead and the bolts are stainless 20mm x 9 off. It is a 30 ft British Hunter.

So should it be 291 or 292 or something else?

Thanks in advance. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

If you use a polyurethane sealant, when next you (or a subsequent owner) tries to remove the keel it will probably be stuck fast. (Know that, been there)

Silicone is probably to feeble and acrylic has no place in a marine environment - which leaves you with a polysulphide.

However, in your place, I'd enquire of the builder (now Lauren Marine) or the designer David Thomas.

I'd avoid surveyors and this forum, some have very strange ideas

G'day Rattler and welcome aboard the YBW forums.

Take care not to over fill the gap, this is the prime reason for keel movement soon after re sealing, more is bad, less is good.

Avagoodweekend......

Hi Rattler.

Hope these will help;

I have a Hunter Horizon 21. There's been some evidence of ingress of water through the hull/keel joints. I've not done anything as drastic as droppinig the keels, but have cleaned out the joints down to sound mastic, shot-blasted, de-rusted and painted the keels, and re-filled the joints with Sikaflex 291.

I'll let you know if it all still works at the end of the sailing season!

Good luck,

Ron.

Thanks for the links.

Sika recommend 292 but as Charles_reed says (above) if ever it needs to come off! So I am leaning towards 291 as I think this will give a good seal but if the keel needs to be removed it will be possible.

Thanks for your comments.
