Nice little article, about kedge anchors in the latest comic.
However it missed a very basic point. Mine is in a locker, usually beneath all the fenders when we are sailing. Would be a pisser to have to get it out in a hurry to kedge us off when aground etc. so the point is......where and how does one store the kedge and have it, with it's chain/rode ready to go. If there was a mounting system for my fortress, readilly available to be fixed to the pushpit I would probably get one.
How do the serious chaps amoungst us keep theirs ready and available, or is this next months article.
Over to you Mr Snooks.

Have a look on the Fortress website, I think they have a link to a third party that does mounting brackets for their anchors.

I saw the answer some years ago in Hiscock's "Cruising Under Sail" and copied it.

There are two CQRs lashed down on chocks on the foredeck, either side of the forehatch. To starboard is a 45 pounder with 80 metres fathoms of 11 mm chain, leading over the windlas gypsy and into the chain locker, secured to it. That's the bower anchor .

To port is a 35 pounder with a 2 metres of heavy chain and 60 metres of nylon warp stopped down in a coil which is stopped to it. That's the kedge.

To use the kedge in a tearing hurry, cut the lashings.

That subject was well covered a couple of years ago in PBO in an article by Richard Hares.

Many different ways depending on your layout of stern and rails. Walk along a busy quay in a Greek harbour and you will get plenty of inspiration. Vary from big plastic buckets tied on, to custom made brackets and rollers with chain and even windlass to a locker under the deck. Much depends on the frequency with which you intend to use your kedge - the more you use it, the more important having a method for easy deployment. Not difficult to get brackets made to stow a Fortress on the pushpit.

I have two kedges, one a lightweight Danforth type kept in a bag with its rode for use from the dinghy and the other a big Britany with rode that is too heavy to take in the dinghy but is also a secondary for the bow anchor. Both kept in a cockpit locker.

I don't agree that I missed it. Lower right on page two of the article. It is simply not possible to write every detail about any topic in a relatively brief article but what I said seems to cover it.

Snooks had no input to the article.

Humble apologies Vyv.

Ovnis appear to carry theirs on a rack on one quarter, carefully designed and positioned to do maximum damage to any boat berthed alongside or arriving/leaving.

I don't know where this fits in but I used to carry a Fortress on the pushpit rail with 5m of chain + warp and it was always an excellent kedge.

I carry a Fortress FX37 lashed on the bow (although mainly because if my big Delta doesn't bite, then that will and I can change it quickly), an FX11 attatched to 50m of 18mm rode and 10m of 10mm chain ready to be deployed in a bucket on the stern. I also carry a 21Kg Danforth lashed on deck as well. I also have a 50m of 25mm rode with 50m of 10mm chain in a locker in the cockpit which can be flaked out on deck in about 5 minutes as well.

But I guess, as I'm at anchor 80% of the year, I'm a bit different to most who will reply.

Can you put it up the side of the locker?

I have a 10KG Danforth that is held upright against the lower bulkhead in the cockpit, it's 750mm long so need a deep locker (strip of wood with a bungee attached to hold the anchor in place) the rope/chain is laid by underneath and all the fenders are stored to one side.

Previous boat had two 25ib CQR's on deck held down by anchor chocks (Force4 code 840439 £30) and utilised an Ankarolina spool on push or pullpit (code 840034 £160 -£200) - pretty good set up.

We dont carry one, it is just not practical. We have a 40metre shore line and a 4 metre chain loop for 'big' rocks.

Fortress FX23 on a bracket on the pushpit attached to 10m of 8mm chain and
45m nylon. It has its own chainpipe on the (small) aft deck (about 400mm between cockpit coaming and transom)and a glassed in marine ply chain locker in the lazarette locker underneath.

Mine lives in a partitioned-off part of the chain locker, below decks. The boat has a bit of stern-down trim due to the bigger engine, so any weight that can be moved forward is good. This is why it's not in the cockpit locker.

The chain and warp are in a mesh bag so it can be easily deployed from anywhere on deck or from the dinghy, as required.

I have a Fortress as a kedge and saw an interesting storage solution on another boat.It was a vertical piece of drainpipe attached to the pushpit with a slot cut partway down each side so that the anchor went in upside down with the wings of the anchor held in the slot. The chain/rope came out of the bottom into a bag.Hope you get the idea from my description.
