In the November PBO there is an article about Jeremy Roger's "green Contessa 32" which is decked with Kebony. It is regarded as the only sustainable alternative to teak. "It has, by and large, been a success. The main complaint from the guys in th yard is that the wood is quite brittle and therefore harder to work with than other woods. It produces a fine dust that smells of molasses that is not to everyones liking." They are encouraging future customers to use it.

Thanks, I've just used search function and quite a few posts have already been posted but no apparent info on prices so may mail the company for sample and prices.

I put a post up here a month or so back about Kebony as a replacement for teak decking.

I subsequently spoke to the UK agents (Brooks Bros, Colchester) & came away with the distinct impression that Mr Rogers was maybe the only one to have used it as a teak deck replacement in the UK.

The contact at BB was singularly downbeat about getting Kebony accepted into the UK marine market (too conservative etc) & also suggested that it would be better on straight decks not swept (although the Contessa's is swept I think) due to its 'brittleness'.

Samples & prices were promised . . . they never arrived.

I hope you have better luck & post your findings on here.

Did you have better luck with Stazo?
Stazo were great - sent samples, prices etc. - couldn't have been more helpful.

I must say though, Guapa looks very good with her Marinedeck2000 but I'll probably revert to plain GRP as the majority of Nic39s were built without teak decks so she won't look out of place without them.

The final decision will be made when I've stripped off the old teak (not next season but possibly the year after) & made good the GRP ready for non-slip or whatever.

Interesting.

The 3 columns are price per linear metre according to min/max length of plank. The price alters (upwards) the longer the plank supplied. It's easier to get a blemish free / in spec short piece than a very long one.

There are 2 qualities as well - the cheaper one having more worls, the expensive one having straighter, more regular grain (as per teak quarter sawn).
