Kayaker rescued after Thames boat capsize
By Becky Middleton
February 05, 2013

A KAYAKER whose boat capsized on the River Thames at the weekend was rescued by fire crews after becoming stranded on an island.

Firefighters confirmed they were called to the Thames Meadow area of Shepperton at 1.40pm on Sunday (February 3) following reports of a person in the river.

Officers from Surrey Police were also called to the scene and a spokesman said the man had fallen into the water after his boat capsized.

According to police, he had dragged himself onto a builder's platform and was stranded there until help arrived.

Crews from Sunbury and Chertsey fire stations attended the incident alongside boats from Walton and Sunbury. They spent just over an hour at the scene near Walton Lane.

A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Two cars and an ambulance were called to the scene to reports that a kayaker had fallen into the river.

"He was found standing on a platform - he had lost his kayak. He was checked at the scene but no injuries were reported."
