Hi
I'm looking for amn engineer to recondition a gearbox of a 3GM30 - it's a Kanzaki KM3P.

Has anybody had similar work done and can recommend a firm? Whilst I live in NW Ireland, I recognise I MIGHT have to send it off somewhere.

Much appreciated (and skint!).

One possibility is have you made sure that the spring assembly connecting the cable to the lever is not seized?

If the "skint" bit is serious then the DIY approach is not too difficult. The gear selection is a simple mechanism - the lever moves a double female cone that slides on a helix on the output shaft into engagement with constantly driven gears with male cones. The load on the output shaft forces the sliding cone hard onto its mate but if the faces are glazed the initial grip doesn't happen and gear engagement is delayed until a wee bit of grip occurs. If what I've written is understandable, it explains why the prop will free wheel in ahead with the engine stopped and locks when in reverse. The sure remedy is to dismantle the box and lap the cones with a little grinding paste (and cleaning it all off). Before getting that drastic you can try, assuming the box is out anyway, and with only a small possibility of success, draining out the oil and washing out the internals with diesel (red is fine!) and operating the lever while turning/holding output and input shafts - it should give +ve engagement, draining and refilling with (IIRC) 0.3litres of engine oil - the dip stick mark is when the stick is not screwed in. If it appears to work after that, put it back and see if it stays good.
If you end up dismantling, you may need to replace oil seal and "o" rings, but unless you change the bearings the shimming should be ok. I also have memories of left-hand thread on the output shaft so check.

Thanks Awol

The "skint" bit is serious..............!! but will probably get somebody to do the lapping as glazing seems to be the issue - so am looking to find somebody suitable to do it.

I have heard it suggested that thinner oil is also supposed to help -with ATF replacing normal multi-grade?
Anybody heard of this?

My Yanmar 'Operations' manual specifies straight SAE30 for the KM2P / KM3P gearboxes (compared to 15W40 for the engine).

There is a different Yanmar/Hurth box (KMW10) that uses ATF.

If you have put engine oil in the box, it would worth draining the oil & washing the box out with diesel (as already suggested) and trying it with SAE30 before taking it to pieces.

I assume that you're experiencing problems in the water, as you need some resistance on the prop to make the box engage properly, so it could be difficult to judge if on the 'hard'.

No I haven't put the wrong engine oil in the box, it was just that somebody suggested that ATF oil instead of SAE 30 would be thinner and MIGHT help the situation. I was just wondering whether anybody had come across this?

and yes, boat is in the water, but not for long :-(

I am still vainly searching for an engineer who could do the lapping for me Anybody?

Thanks

Jaba
