basic, i know, but

recently i used a pump to remove the warm old oil through the dipstick.

can't say i was happy with the speed or the quantity i got out, recon i got about 80% of the total out.
looking at how much went back in again.

there is a drain plug under the oil pan, that's gona get messy, but i'd rather do it properly, worth the hassle ?
what does one use to catch it all, access is very poor.

or is there a third way ?

The only way in your boat is dip-stick method.

I tried those electric pumps - too slow. I now use the pump-action vacuum pump (non electric) - You're right, they get about 80 - 90% of the oil out. However, I change my oil twice annually (so about every 50 hours) so it's not an issue.

(And yes, the 2 x oil changes annually is OTT, but oil is cheap, so why not)

Yes, there is a way and it involves some work if you don't have a drain plug and the first thing to do is have one installed OR have a drain tube welded to the lowest point of the sump which leads to the side of the engine, normally you can find a sump from an engine used in a different application with a drain plug to fit your engines.

Fit a pipe into the sump plug drain and run to an appropriate accessible point, install an on/off valve in line and then fit a blanking cap or bung to the end of the pipe as an extra safety measure and when you drain your oil you can drain it a little at a time into a container using the valve to control it and you get 100% of the oil out along with any sediment or sludge building up in the bottom of the sump.

tnx, which manual pump do you use ?

How hot were the engines when you drained them as this makes a big difference.

First time i changed oil..AD41P-A...i ran the engines for about 25 mins each and got about 80% out like you...not good i thought.

So the next year i went for an hours blast at 20kts and got about 95% out. It made me understand just how long it takes for engine oil to heat up in big engines.

With my experience for several years, the KAD44 C engine oil suction of about 7-8 liters gets out of the machine and the engine always has 3-4 liters of dirty oil which is naturally not a good thing. I made the oil shunt machine's normal heat of about 85C and a good quality vacuum pump. On the other hand, I know KAD44 has reached +5000 hours without being rebuilt.

good point, did the change after running it on the trailer, on land etc.

shall do the next one on the water now i am confident how to proceed.
