KAD42\'s Any good?

Hi All,

I have been told that the Volvo KAD42's are an engine to stay away from due to design faults. Does anyone know if this is true?

Yawn... Here we go again, another VP bashing!!

Bashing?

if you would care to read my post I am asking for info. Instead of Yawning maybe you could wake up and learn to read.

I have a couple of AD41's and they are very good engines.
I have been told to keep away from the 42's due to a design fault. I would like to find out if this is true.

If BMW can get it wrong with their V8 I'm sure VP can make the odd mistake.

Re: KAD42\'s Any good?

if you use search option.bit of info regarding piston crown erosion prob on 42s will appear.Think most engines will have been modded or sorted by now.

Re: KAD42\'s Any good?

Clive,

Just been to La Rochelle and back with twin KAD42's - never missed a beat. 1.5MPG @ 22kts in a Targa 39, cruising at 3100rpm. We've had supercharger silencers fitted to quieten them down a bit, which actually makes them KAD43's I think.

Re: KAD42\'s Any good?

Well I think I may have been misinformed, I was told that a surveyor said don't buy a boat with KAD42's and that the KAD42 became the 43 because the 42 got a bad reputation.

Cuts your options of second-hand boats down a lot as the 42's are a popular choice!

One good word of advice from an engineer was that there are not really any bad engines, just poorly serviced or not serviced at all, and make sure they are actually serviced according to the Volvo book! If it's time for the oil cooler to come off and be cleaned out do it. I think there was some case of a Volvo unit going bang and it did have full service history but as the rocker covers had never come off due to the engine fit inside the boat the valves had never been adjusted!

On my last boat I had the legs serviced but I noticed that the grease nipples had not even been touched. I didn't use that engineer again!

Re: KAD42\'s Any good?

Clive,

Interesting post. I also have 41's in a SS Portofino and want to upgrade to a Martinique 38 next year. The M38 comes with both engines but I am concerned that despite paying morge for larger/newer engines the extra speed might prove costly if pistons start to fail.

FYI i posted the same questiong on www.boatdiesel.com

Youre welcome to email me if you want to share anything that cannot be posted on the forum.

Re: KAD42\'s Any good?

Hi Rob,
Good boat the M38, friend of mine had one with 41's in. Had to have them rebuilt as they hadn't been serviced properly!

yes might be best to continue off the Forum

cheers,

Clive.

Re: KAD42\'s Any good?

So do you think that KAD42s on my Sealine S37 made in 1999 should devalue the boat resale compared to say 43s? Are they likley to have been modded by that build date?
I'm contemplating selling, so does it make a difference?

Re: KAD42\'s Any good?

I have heard of cylinder gasket problems on early 42's but yours must be one of the last so well after the problem was solved (I think they reverted back to the old design gasket). I can't imagine that there is any preference for 43's against 42's (I've got 43's in my S37) I think people will pay more for the 'fly by wire' 44's and certainly KAD300's.
Selling already why??

Re: KAD42\'s Any good?

Selling because we can't get moorings (without costing the earth and then some!) on the bit of coast in Spain that we are after. Not 100% decided yet though. Love the boat, so it's a really hard call. Also the old problem of working so much that we don't get a chance to use the boat- only a pitiful twice this last season!! We had (and still do) hoped for a longer season in the Med.
How do you get to use yours? A couple of weeks at a time, 3 or 4 times a year is what I had in mind.

Re: KAD42\'s Any good?

Hi Howard
We had to change our vision considerably. We had a view that we could travel the Med in a part time way dropping in at various marinas and flying back from the various locations on maybe a 3-4 week cycle..... Not so. To get marina space we have had to sign up for a whole year and make it a base. So 2002 was Sardinia and 2003 Rome. Next year Barcelona we hope. We are really enjoying it nevertheless
It seems that the marina undercapacity of the Med has led to the catering for full time livaboards and those who want a permanent base but not for the part-time traveller.
ps...plenty of space in Rome and £3000 a year

Re: KAD42\'s Any good?

Many thanks for your concern regarding my state of rest and ability to read!!!!

Perhaps I should have posted with greater explanation so as perhaps you would not have misunderstood. What I was getting at was, oh here we go again all the VP bashers will love this and post anti KAD42/VP info etc etc.

I for one am very pro VP, sure the earlier 42s could and some have suffered from bad fuelling/injector and subsequent stuffing of the piston, sometimes seen as a piston 'melt-down' for want of a better description.

Nothing wrong with KAD42s...

"Bashing?"
