Can somebody give me an idea what I should expect to pay for 100 hour service (within warranty period therefore VP dealer) on KAD300?

Should automatic replacement parts include:

- V belt
- another V belt
- impeller
- oil filter
- filter insert
- drive belt
- another drive belt
- insert
- gasket kit
- another drive belt
- another insert

If KAD 300 is the same as the KAD44 (which i think it is, v similar model just uprated) then that kind of list looks a bit like an annual or 200hr service (whichever comes first). Belts, impellers and all filters are on the list.

100hr service is technically oil and oil filter change only, plus a few bits around the edges, but only ever happens if you do more than 100hr annually.

If 200hr is the service they did they should have charged you a fair bit for valve adjustments too; if you cannot work that out from bill or checklists then check the paintwork on the rocker cover to get a clue as to whether it has been taken off. If you suspect the valve adjustments not done and this is a 200hr/annual then ask why -- it's critical on thes 44/300 24-valve manual adjust heads.

Having said that (and assuming the bits are for one engine), five belts seems strange -- from memory there will be a vee belt for the alternator and a flat belt for the camshaft and another flat belt for the supercharger?

Similarly there seem to be a lot of filter components.

Unfortuantely the Volvo service sheet reads something like "check, and replace if necessary". Of course they are replaced regardless of condition....
I think the first service on a volvo is within the first 50 hrs, then every 100hrs after.
At 150hrs is oil and filter change, at 250hrs is MAJOR service (belts, filters, impellers, tappet adjustment, coolant, Supercharger oil??). 350hrs nominal service, 450hrs MAJOR service, so on and so on.............
My last major service on twin KAD43's was £1180.

What amazes me is my boat is less than two years old and has already had 4 services at a cost of almost 3k!!! What a rip off.

You may be lucky and only have 1 year warranty with your engines, in that case you are only tied into Volvo dealerships for the first year. I got three years warranty and have been paying for ever since!!

Yes - well "check and replace if necessary" means just that. I'm not paying for new belts unless they can PROVE to me they were needed by producing the old ones. The agent in question has admitted that their policy is "replace them regardless of condition". £1,460 for 150 hours service including NINE belts (there are only seven on the two engines) and FOUR primary fuel filter inserts (only two primary units). Total bill approx. double that quoted by another local agent.

Watch this space - I'm going public on this.

Would you post/copy a breakdown of the invoice, to see the split between charges for parts and labour?

Thanks for comments Kim. Fuel filters ARE on the list for automatic replacement but at 200 hours (no problem with that) and I can understand oil filter automatic replacement with change of oil. Belts are NOT automatic replacement at any time before 600 hours/5 years. They are "check and adjust tension/replace if necessary". Somebody in VP product support advised me today that modern belts last for ages and do not require routine replacement.

AIUI, you're right on the number of belts except one engine will have additional belt to drive the power steering, if fitted (as it is in our case). Odd that I've been charged for NINE!

Cheers.

I hate hearing about people having no confidence in the service they have been given. Why aren't we reading about people that HAVE had excellent service at a reasonable price.? I have heard other horror stories and I cant help thinking it is worthwhile marking everything that is fitted, belts at least. It is possible to mark them before the service is carried out, then if you are given some unmarked ones back, you know you have been done. All these things take time though, and if you live miles from your boat it may not be practical.

A lady friend of mine took her car in to have some bodywork done. When she was presented with the bill it clearly charged for some new parts which had NOT been fitted. She made some excuse about having to call in and see them in a couple of days about the bill but said it depended what time the court adjourned. The guy made a comment about hoping she gets aquitted, but went quiet when she told him she was a Crown Prosucution lawyer! When she went in to discuss the bill they very kindly presented her with a corrected bill as 'there had been a mistake'.

Makes you sick doesn't it.

I am happy to report excellent service from Whitewater Marine, Dublin...
50hour service on twin VP D6 and sterndrives.
€436.80 incl 40L oil, 4 filters and Labour.
When the service was underway they noticed a split in the Stbd drive exhaust bellows. They contacted VP and two new bellows were delivered from the UK in 2 days. They were fitted under warranty incl, lift out, wash, lift in.
