I met a guy who, hours before he was going to sell his boat had his KAD 44 electronically stick in forward drive and pranged it into a jetty.
I think it's a very isolated problem because there are thousands of then out there working perfectly OK.

There is a modification kit out for the compressor belt and tensioner as the early ones used to eat belts. Also make sure the boat has a good filter system on the fuel system as if you get water through to the engine it will ruin the injection pump, have a Scand with two 44's in it that we are changing the pumps on as he has water in the tank and he didn't check the water seperators. Two pumps at £5,000 each plus labour. otherwise the motor doesn't give much trouble.

When you say early ones what year are we talking? I have 1998 KAD 44's - would they have been fitted with the updated tensioner assy do you think?

On the subject of fuel filters is it necessary to change primary and secondary fuel filters yearly? (primary is Separ)

Probably not as the kits haven't been out as long as 98, but you will know if the belt starts to squeal and wear out quickly. Yes the filters should be changed yearly, its cheap insurance in the long run. Its no fun if the engines stop and the weather is rough and you have to change them in a pitching rolling boat, and you should always have a spare set on board.
Separ are a good filter they are fitted on Princess and Fairline boats though not as easy to change as Racor. You will need an 8m socket, extension and ratcher in
1\4"drive to remove the square top section and a 10mm spanner for opening the bleeding screw on the secondary filter housing, and a strap wrench to get the secondary off. As I said its worth visually inspecting the glass bowls on the Separs to check for water and drain it off as req'd.
